Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years, there has been a growing debate about whether theatres and cinemas are still relevant. Some argue that they become unnecessary because of online platforms while others believe that these places still have greater importance for economic and cultural perspectives. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I maintain that these physical entertainment places can not be fully replaced with digital platforms.
On the one hand, online platforms are more convenient for people in this modern world. People are more comfortable to watch their favourite film or programs on telivisions, laptops, and mobile phones in their home at suitable time. Moreover, it is not expensive compared to cinema tickets. Likewise, individuals would have different options according to their interests on these digital devices. For example, a person may choose to watch latest movie or tv show with doing other things and he is not bound to watch full program in one instance.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas played a significant role in providing employment opportunities. These venues provide jobs to staff, technicians, and actors. In addition, these physical venues provided an atmosphere in which large screens are displayed and proper sound systems are provided which may not be experienced in houses. Furthermore, such places are important for cultural values. Theatres provide live performances of local actors and artists which promote custom of the area. Similarly, cinemas are important for promotion of films of local stars and heroes.
However, due to advancement in technology, a large number of individuals are shifted towards online sources. I believe that Governments and related authorities should promote theatres and cinemas work because they are essential for economic growth and cultural values. This can be done by striking a balance between online sources and physical venues.
In conclusion, although digital devices are more convenient and cheaper than cinemas. However, theatres and cinemas are still relevant in digital age because of cultural and economic benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the relevance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age, while also clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with explanations, such as mentioning employment opportunities for actors and technicians, and the cultural value of live performances. However, some arguments tend to generalise or remain slightly under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where examples could have been more specific. For instance, the discussion on digital platforms touches on convenience and cost, but lacks deeper exploration of how this shifts societal habits. Overall, the prompt is adequately answered, placing the response firmly at a Band 6.5 level as it covers all required components with a clear position, though further extension and depth would be needed for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a clear overall arrangement with a standard four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, a discussion of the writer's opinion combined with a recommendation, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used to signal logical progression and guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and the final concluding sentence contains a grammatical glitch ('although digital devices are more convenient... However, theatres...') that disrupts the logical flow between clauses. Despite these minor flaws, the organizational structure remains logical and coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms such as 'employment opportunities', 'cultural values', 'digital age', and 'live performances'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, but some word choices and collocations lack precision or naturalness, such as 'promote theatres and cinemas work' instead of 'support the work of theatres and cinemas', or 'shifted towards online sources'. Spelling is generally accurate, though minor mechanical errors occur, such as 'telivisions'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, occasional inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher lexical band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I maintain that...'). There are, however, frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tense consistency, prepositions, and article usage. Examples include 'these places still have greater importance for economic and cultural perspectives' (instead of 'from economic and cultural perspectives'), 'People are more comfortable to watch' (instead of 'comfortable watching'), and 'with doing other things'. Additionally, sentence structure slips occur, as seen in the final sentence fragment starting with 'Although'. While these errors are noticeable and require occasional rereading, they do not severely impede communication, supporting a Band 6 score for grammatical range and accuracy.
