Student answer (Band 6.0)

Undoubtedly, cinemas have been a major part of entertainment. However, based on their significance today, people's opinions vary. Few people think that big screens are now outdated and replaced by other media platforms. Individuals consuming entertainment online. Whereas, some others advocate that cinemas and theatres are still relevant to this day; they are a part of culture and an essential source of entertainment. This essay will discuss both the perspective and my opinion will be reflected through out the entire essay.

It is widely accepted that, since the advancement of technology, there is a plethora of entertainment platforms available and offering easy access to consumers, to some extent, this perspective is true and undeniable, behind this narrative, a significant portion of youth are involved, who love advanced technology and comfort over orthodox sources of entertainment. For instance, the young generation is more aware of the use of different digital gadgets as compared to older generation, and they spend most of their time with technology. Especially for entertainment purposes. Therefore, their opinion is based on their experience.

In contrast, some people believe that cinema and theatres play a pivotal role both with regard to the economy and culture, although this fact could not be rebutted; both are now somewhat replaced by other digital platforms, where people enjoy cost-effective and quality content. For instance, Netflix, Prime Video, and so on; these platforms offer high-resolution videos at much more pocket-friendly rates.

In conclusion, the younger generation is obviously smarter and prefers budget-friendly sources of entertainment, rather than being extravagant. And in my opinion, they do make more sense than the latter perspective.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the perspective that cinemas are outdated and the view that they remain economically and culturally important. The student attempts to state a position in the introduction, noting that 'my opinion will be reflected through out the entire essay,' and concludes by siding with the first perspective. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on the younger generation spending time on digital gadgets is stated multiple times without introducing fresh supporting arguments. Furthermore, the conclusion unexpectedly introduces the idea of being 'extravagant,' which departs slightly from the main thread of the argument. While the task is addressed, the ideas would benefit from deeper extension and clearer logical progression to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall coherent arrangement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the sentence 'Individuals consuming entertainment online. Whereas, some others advocate...' contains a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition words used, such as 'In contrast' and 'Therefore,' are occasionally misapplied or result in awkward phrasing, such as starting a dependent clause with 'Whereas,' without an independent clause attached. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical links between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to achieve a higher band descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'plethora of entertainment platforms,' 'orthodox sources of entertainment,' and 'cost-effective and quality content.' However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, the phrase 'few people think that big screens are now outdated' is imprecise in context, and 'the young generation is more aware of the use of different digital gadgets' sounds unnatural compared to 'proficient in using.' There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'advocate that cinemas and theatres are still relevant to this day.' These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a solid band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and sentence structure errors, such as the sentence fragment 'Individuals consuming entertainment online.' Another example of a faulty structure is found in the introduction: 'This essay will discuss both the perspective and my opinion will be reflected through out the entire essay,' where 'through out' is misspelled as two words, and 'perspective' should be plural. While many sentences are understandable, errors in comma splices, fragments, and preposition use occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
