Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online instead of going to cinemas, booking tickets and wait. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. I agree with the first view because online entertainment is more convenient, cheaper and offers more choices.

One main reason why cinemas and theatres are becoming less important is that people can watch entertainment from the comfort of their homes. Online platforms allow people to watch films, TV shows and other programmes whenever they want. They do not need to travel to a cinema or wait for a particular show time. For example, people can watch a movie on their phone, laptop or television while sitting at home. This is especially useful for busy people who have limited free time. So it is a better way for busy peoples.

Another reason is that online entertainment can be cheaper and provides a much wider range of choices. Going to the cinema can be expensive because people have to pay for tickets, transport and food. In contrast, many online services are affordable, and some websites even provide free content. Moreover, people can choose from thousands of movies, shows and videos online. They can also stop, pause or replay the content whenever they want. Therefore, online entertainment gives people greater freedom and convenience. But if you want a nostalgic feel and much enjoyable moments you can consider to go to a cinema hall or a theatre.

In conclusion, I agree that theatres and cinemas are becoming less important in the digital age. Online entertainment is convenient, affordable and offers a huge variety of content. For these reasons, more people are likely to prefer watching entertainment online rather than visiting cinemas or theatres.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of theatres in the digital age versus their ongoing cultural and economic importance—and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, supported by examples such as watching films on phones or laptops and the costs associated with cinema-going. However, some arguments lack deeper extension, and the transition into acknowledging the counter-perspective in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt ('But if you want a nostalgic feel...'). Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, with a clear position maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is arranged coherently with a logical overall progression from the introduction to body paragraphs discussing convenience and cost, and a clear concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are generally present and clear, such as 'One main reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, and certain conjunctions are used awkwardly to begin sentences (e.g., 'So it is a better way' and 'But if you want...'). These minor issues keep the cohesion at a competent, moderately fluent level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'convenient', 'affordable', 'nostalgic feel', and 'digital age'. There are attempts at less common phrasing, though some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or repetitive, such as 'much enjoyable moments' instead of 'more enjoyable moments'. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the essay. The lexical range allows the writer to convey their message clearly, although precision and sophistication are somewhat limited, aligning well with Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses ('Online platforms allow people to watch films...'). There are some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'booking tickets and wait' (parallelism error) and 'busy peoples' (unnecessary pluralisation). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally maintained, and while errors do occur, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. The presence of these frequent minor errors alongside complex structures supports a Band 6.0 score for grammatical control.
