Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people think that parents should teach their children

how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe

that school is the best place to learn this. Discuss both views

and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that children should be taught by their parents, how to become better individuals of community. However, others, thought school is good place to learn this. Although schools can significantly contribute to children's social development, I believe that parents have the greater responsibility because they influence their children's behaviour from an early age.

On the one hand, schools play crucial role in developing children's social life. As schools provide environment, where students come from diffrent culture and economic background, where they interact with each other and learn about diffrent lifestyles. Furthermore, activities like group projects and presentation can teach them how to cope with difficulties and resolve disagreements. Schools can also give lessons about social responsibilities. For instance, American schools give diffrent tasks to their students to volunteer in different fields and give them grace marks. Ultimately, it provide students an experience on how to be a responsible citizen of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response suffers from a major task misunderstanding. Although the prompt provided in the instructions discusses whether theatres and cinemas are still important in the digital age, the student actually wrote their essay about whether parents or schools should teach children how to be good members of society (responding to a completely different topic). Furthermore, the Length Check confirms the response contains only 189 words, falling well short of the 250-word minimum requirement. Consequently, the development is severely truncated and off-topic. Based on the band descriptors, addressing the task only partially and tangentially places this criterion at Band 4.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Despite the off-topic content, the text displays a basic logical organisation. The writer uses standard introductory and body paragraph structures, attempting cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing is sometimes faulty, as seen in the sentence 'Ultimately, it provide students an experience', where the pronoun lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is visible, but the essay trails off abruptly after only one body paragraph due to under-length. Overall, the structural framework is discernible, aligning best with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing social development, such as 'social responsibility', 'economic background', and 'cooperate with difficulties'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('diffrent' instead of different) and word choice inaccuracies ('better individuals of community' instead of better members of the community). These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.0 as the vocabulary lacks sufficient flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses starting with 'Although schools can...'. However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors including subject-verb agreement issues ('it provide students', 'Others, thought school is good place') and missing articles ('provide environment', 'good place'). Complex structures are often faulty. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, fitting the profile for Band 5.0.
