Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the decline of theatres due to online streaming and their ongoing economic and cultural importance—while also providing a clear personal opinion. The main ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as comparing Netflix subscriptions to cinema ticket costs and mentioning job creation and cultural heritage. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly, and the conclusion is somewhat brief, which places this response comfortably at Band 6.5 to 7.0. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, but deeper extension could have pushed the score higher.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. There is a logical progression of ideas moving from the introduction to online entertainment, then to the economic and cultural counter-arguments, and finally to a conclusion. The student uses standard cohesive devices such as 'In this digital era', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, and occasional errors in paragraph transitions prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Overall, the logical flow is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'cultural heritage', 'significance', and 'convenient'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'culyure' instead of 'culture', 'benifits' instead of 'benefits', 'whie' instead of 'while', 'subscibe' instead of 'subscribe', 'industy' instead of 'industry', and 'cinimas' instead of 'cinemas'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and conditional phrasing. There are, however, frequent errors in grammar, articles, and punctuation. Examples include 'Some individual believe' (subject-verb agreement), 'access through internet' (missing article), 'donot have any need to spent' (missing apostrophe and incorrect verb form), 'time bounded' (word form), and 'more cheap' (comparative form). Although these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to pull the grammar score down to a Band 6.0.
