IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In modern technology, individuals are changing day by day according to their moods. There are some benefits and disadvantages with this, in my opinion.
Some argue that they have to spend so much money on entertainment, when everything is available on the internet. They will encourage people to go out without knowing what they are doing, spending so much time in theatres and the cost of tickets that they are considering, all leading to take this decision. Most of them become lazy because of their work, and they want to save their weekends.
On the other hand, there will be citizens that are enthusiastic about going to cinemas. Advantages for going to cinema are the people who will have a memorable experience. The atmosphere of films like Maharashtra and movies they watch shapes their life. The first thing to do is very important for a citizen who has to encourage piracy. The director's hard work is behind a good movie. There are also good impacts on people's life. They have so much history and cultural value, and experiencing it with family is very good.
From my perspective, going to a movie in the theatre is better. Experiencing the culture from there is very significant nowadays.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at only 205 words. Consequently, this leads to a direct penalty in Task Achievement as the ideas are significantly under-developed. While the student attempts to discuss both views regarding the importance of theatres in the digital age and provides a personal opinion, the arguments lack depth and proper extension. For example, the point about people becoming lazy and wanting to save weekends is abrupt and barely explored. Similarly, the counter-argument regarding cultural value and memorable experiences is fragmented, mentioning unrelated concepts like piracy and Maharashtra without clear contextual integration. To improve, the writer needs to expand significantly on each supporting point with detailed explanations and concrete examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, which shows some basic awareness of essay structure, but the internal coherence and progression of ideas are quite weak. Transitions between sentences and paragraphs often feel abrupt or disconnected. For instance, the transition from discussing financial costs in the second paragraph to the counter-argument in the third paragraph lacks a clear cohesive link. Furthermore, referencing is frequently unclear; phrases like 'advantages for going to cinema are the people who will have a memorable experience' are awkward and confuse the logical flow. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, leading to a disjointed reading experience that fails to guide the reader smoothly through the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with limited range appropriate for an Academic task. The student frequently relies on simple words like 'good', 'things', and 'people'. There are also significant lexical inaccuracies and unnatural collocations that impede understanding, such as 'individuals are changing day by day according to their moods' and 'encourage piracy' when the context clearly implies discouraging it. Words related to the topic, such as 'entertainment', 'internet', and 'cultural value', appear, but the overall lexical resource is restricted and barely adequate for the task, preventing the expression of precise or sophisticated ideas.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, with heavy reliance on simple sentences and occasional attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are several noticeable errors in grammar, subject-verb agreement, and phrasing that cause difficulty for the reader. For example, 'They will encourage people to go out' is grammatically problematic given the preceding context, and 'Advantages for going to cinema are the people who will have a memorable experience' contains a structural mismatch. Punctuation is generally simplistic, and the frequent structural awkwardness means that error-free sentences are in the minority. This places the grammar firmly at the Band 5 level.
