Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the shift towards online entertainment and the enduring economic and cultural importance of physical venues—while also presenting a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the argument regarding online viewing simply states that people use smartphones or laptops to watch shows on websites like Netflix, without fully extending the broader implications of this shift. Similarly, the points about economic and cultural benefits remain vague, relying on general assertions rather than concrete examples. While a clear position is established and maintained throughout, the lack of depth and the somewhat under-developed supporting arguments prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Coherence and cohesion suffer significantly from structural issues, including punctuation errors, abrupt sentence breaks, and mechanical linking devices. The introductory paragraph contains disjointed sentences and stray punctuation marks, such as extra full stops mid-sentence, which disrupt the flow of reading. Although paragraphing is attempted, the internal progression of ideas is often confusing. For instance, transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the sentences that follow lack smooth logical transitions, leading to run-on structures and unclear referencing (such as 'this two sorts places of arts'). Cohesive devices are either inadequate, overused, or incorrectly applied, resulting in a somewhat fragmented overall arrangement. Consequently, these organizational flaws warrant a Band 5.0 for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource displayed is limited and exhibits noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'economical and cultural sectors' and 'benifice', but demonstrates weak control over word formation and collocation, leading to inaccurate forms like 'cltural', 'belive', and 'wheras'. There is also a heavy reliance on repetitive vocabulary, with words like 'important', 'arts', and 'watch' recurring frequently throughout the essay. While terms such as 'platforms', 'netflix', and 'entertainment' show a basic adequacy for discussing the topic, frequent spelling and word-choice errors—such as 'remplaced' instead of 'replaced' and 'humans' instead of 'people'—keep the lexical performance at a Band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range and accuracy are characterized by a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but with a high frequency of errors that cause difficulty for the reader. The text contains numerous grammatical inaccuracies, including subject-verb agreement issues ('both views has these own advantages'), incorrect auxiliary usage, and severe punctuation errors that create fragmented sentences, such as 'spending time and money to' ending abruptly. Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty, leading to structural confusion. Punctuation is poorly handled, with commas and full stops misplaced throughout the response. Although the general meaning can eventually be discerned, the density of grammatical and mechanical errors restricts the score to a Band 5.0.
