Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people think that in the modern world where movies are available to us at our homes online, theatres and cinemas are not as meaningful as before, while others believe that theatres and cinemas are yet a crucial aspect to both the economy and culture. In my opinion theatres and cinemas plays an important part in the movie watching experience.

Some individuals suggest that because of over-the-top (OTT) platforms, the trend to watch new movies in cinemas is dead because all those movies are available to us at our homes at much lower prices and at our comfort. To some extent, this is true as there are fewer people who prefer watching movies in theatres since the tickets are too costly. Additionaly, it provodes the option to pause or replay the part that we missed and gives the freedom to choose our own tiime.

On the other hand, theatres provide a unmatched experience to that of any online platforms. The box office gross defines how well the movie did. Furthermore, going to the cinema with friend or family and enjoying the outing is a common way to relax for many people. Not to mention, some movies are worth the expense and time spent, for example, The Odyssey is a 100% IMax movie and reaches its best potential when watched in a big screen.

In conclusion, While online platforms are a great alternative to theatres, there are still many aspects that attracts movie enthusiasts toward the cinema. I firmly believe that theatres and cinemas offer absolutely unforgettable experience, which is hard to replace. Therefore, they will continue to contribute financially and socially.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the view that theatres are no longer important due to online streaming and the counter-argument that they remain crucial economically and culturally. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are reasonably well developed, such as mentioning the convenience of OTT platforms and contrasting this with the immersive social and sensory experience of cinemas, like IMAX. While some points are slightly generalized, such as ticket costs and the box office impact, the coverage is sufficient to meet the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0. The development could be pushed further with more specific economic data, but overall, all prompt instructions are fulfilled competently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into four distinct paragraphs, following a standard introduction, body paragraph one (online advantages), body paragraph two (cinema advantages), and conclusion structure. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, referencing is occasionally slightly loose, and there are some minor mechanical links or punctuation issues that prevent a higher score, such as the missing comma after 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear overall progression of ideas throughout the response, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'over-the-top (OTT) platforms', 'movie enthusiasts', and 'immense potential' show an attempt to use less common items. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'at our comfort' instead of 'in the comfort of our homes', 'provodes' (spelling error), and 'an unmatched experience' where 'a' should be used. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control is adequate but contains occasional inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over multi-clause structures like 'Many people think that in the modern world where movies are available...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and slips throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas plays' instead of 'play'), spelling errors ('Additionaly', 'tiime', 'friend'), and minor punctuation omissions. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear and communication is never impeded. The command of grammar and punctuation fits comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor.
