Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the contemporary era, theatres and cinemas has emerged as a profoundly contentious issue, sparking considerable debate among individuals. While a segment of people asserts that theatres and cinemas are no longer beneficial in our life, others strongly oppose that they are pivotal economically and culturally. This essay aims to critically examine both perspectives. From my standpoint, I firmly convinced that these centers provide several significant benefits.

On the one hand, a significant number of people believe that the cinemas and the theatres are become more unnecessary in modern society. Online website facilitates individuals greatly to access movies and dramas through online. Furthermore, it also enables individuals who are busy in their daily responsibilities to get all the entertainment at home. For example, people who lives in rural areas face several challenges to watch entertainment in cinemas as these are far away from them.

On the other hand, some people contend that the cinemas and the theatres still important part of our culture and economic. They promote outing of families and couples which may lead to greater experience of happiness and enjoyment. This also offers employment for those who works in cinemas and theatres. For example, this provide opportunities to individuals to relax after busy life cycle. This clearly illustrates that they also offers far greater benefits.

From my perspective, I firmly believe that technology provide greater convenience and flexibility but it cannot replace theatres and cinemas as these are essential parts of our life. Consequently, both the cinema and the online platforms should be gone hand in hand.

In conclusion, there exists divergence of opinion that the cinemas and theatres should be promoted or prohibited. Both have equally importance in our life. Therefore, cinemas and theatres should be actively promoted in contemporary society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of physical cinemas in the digital age versus their ongoing economic and cultural importance—and presents a clear personal position. The introduction outlines the two perspectives and your standpoint, which is then expanded upon in the body paragraphs. However, the ideas lack deep extension and tend to rely on slightly repetitive points, such as mentioning convenience multiple times without introducing new dimensions of analysis. For instance, the second paragraph states that online websites facilitate access to movies for busy individuals and those in rural areas, but this could have been contrasted more sharply with the communal aspect of viewing. Despite these limitations in depth, all core requirements of the prompt are covered. This performance aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that follows standard IELTS Task 2 conventions. Logical connectors are used to signal transitions between paragraphs, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the phrase 'the cinemas and the theatres are become more unnecessary' shows awkward phrasing, and the concluding paragraphs contain redundant restatements of your opinion rather than creating a smooth progression to a final synthesis. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, but internal cohesion within sentences occasionally stumbles due to awkward transitions and repetitive phrasing. Therefore, the Coherence and Cohesion score reflects a solid Band 6 level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'contemporary era', 'profoundly contentious issue', and 'pivotal economically and culturally'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text. Examples include 'theatres and cinemas has emerged' (subject-verb agreement error embedded in the noun phrase), 'the cinemas and the theatres are become', and 'economic' instead of 'economics' or 'economic importance'. Additionally, phrasing like 'busy life cycle' is unnatural. While communication is not impeded and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the frequency of lexical inaccuracies prevents the response from reaching a higher band. This represents a clear Band 6 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at complex structures such as concessive clauses starting with 'While' and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'cinemas and theatres has emerged', 'are become more unnecessary', 'people who lives', 'this provide opportunities', and 'technology provide'. Furthermore, articles are occasionally misused, as seen in 'the cinemas and the theatres still important part'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from achieving a Band 7. The control of grammar is characteristic of a Band 5.5 or 6.0; given the presence of valid complex structures alongside recurring basic slips, a score of 6.0 is appropriate.
