Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, some people believe that online enterntairnment has made theatres and cinemas unnecessary, while other argue that this venues gives benefits financially and culturally. Although digital platform offer greater conviencing, I firmly believe that theatres and cinemas remains important because they provide employment and provide valuable cultural experience.

On the one hand, online entertainment is often more convenient and affordable than visiting a theatre or cinema. People can watch films and recorded performances at home without paying for transport or arranging their schedules around a particular show. For example, a family can watch several films through a monthly subscription that may cost less than one cinema visit. Consequently, some people see little reason to spend additional time and money attending these venues.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas offer economic and cultural benefits that online platforms cannot fully replace. Economically, they provide jobs for performers, technicians and other staff, while attracting customers to nearby restaurants and shops. Culturally, theatres give local artists a place to perform and keep traditional stories alive. Cinemas also allow audiences to enjoy films together on a large screen, creating a shared experience that differs from watching alone. For these reasons, I believe such venues continue to play a valuable role in society.

In conclusion, although online entertainment is convenient and often cheaper, theatres and cinemas remain economically and culturally valuable. I believe digital platforms should be seen as an additional source of entertainment rather than a complete replacement for these venues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the view that theatres and cinemas are no longer important due to online entertainment and the counter-argument regarding their economic and cultural significance. A clear personal position is presented in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, and the writer provides appropriate supporting examples, such as comparing monthly streaming subscriptions to cinema ticket costs and highlighting employment generation. However, a strict length check reveals the response is 247 words, falling slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement. This minor under-length constraint prevents the score from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but greater development and length management are needed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. The essay is divided into four appropriate paragraphs, moving logically from an introduction with a clear thesis to body paragraphs examining opposing views, and concluding with a summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, as seen with transition signals like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. Referencing is generally clear, with pronouns linking back to previously mentioned concepts smoothly. While some cohesive relationships could be slightly more sophisticated to reach Band 7, the structuring and logical sequencing remain coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'financial and culturally', 'subscription', and 'comprehensive replacement'. However, there are several spelling and word choice errors, including 'enterntairnment' instead of entertainment, 'this venues' instead of these venues, and 'conviencing' instead of convenience. Despite these lapses, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, and communication is not impeded. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to eliminate spelling inaccuracies and demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical choices without relying on basic or repetitive terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'Although digital platforms offer greater convenience, I firmly believe that...'). There is a reasonable level of control over basic sentence forms. However, there are notable grammatical errors and inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas remains' instead of remain) and minor prepositional or article slips. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. A wider range of error-free complex sentences and more consistent grammatical accuracy would be required to secure a Band 7.
