Student answer (Band 6.0)
People hold differeing views on the imporatnce of theatres and cinemas. Some believe that theatres are no longer important as people can stream all kinds of entertainment online, at home. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still relevant for both cultural and economical reasons. While there are valid arguements on both the sides, I am of the opinion that cinemas and theatres are an important part of out society.
On one hand, people who think that theatres are no longer important argue that if we have the convenience of watching any content from the comfort of our home, why spend money to go out. In today's time almost everyone has monthly subscriptions for almost all streaming platforms to watch series, movies etc. So, if you are spending that amount over multiple streaming sites, why spend more on transport, movie tickets, snacks when the same thing can be watched at home with minimum spending and also save you time.
On the other hand, proponents argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. It promotes the art of acting and drama and motivates the artists, directors and producers to continually practise their art. It also opens up employment for a wide range of people from actors, to directors, to producers, to makeup artists and hairstylists, to vendors building the sets and so many more. It also gives a platform for like minded people to gather and discuss their views and opinions on art and how to improve it further.
I would like to conclude by saying that it is true to state that theatres and cinemas are very vital for the society both economically and culturally and that more people should go and watch movies and shows and support the artists at all levels.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on theatres and cinemas and presenting a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the first body paragraph discusses streaming convenience and cost-saving aspects quite well, but relies on a somewhat repetitive rhetorical question structure ('why spend money... why spend more...'). The second body paragraph outlines economic and cultural benefits such as promoting drama and providing employment for actors, directors, and makeup artists, but these supporting points remain general rather than fully extended. The response meets the requirements of the task overall, but deeper exploration of the economic and cultural impacts would be needed to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, with clear transitional markers like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' guiding the reader through competing viewpoints. The response clearly sits at a half-band level because it successfully demonstrates some characteristics of the higher band—such as an overall logical flow and manageable referencing—while still exhibiting slightly mechanical cohesive devices. For example, the sentence transitions rely on standard formulas, and referencing phrases like 'when the same thing can be watched at home' could be managed with smoother cohesive links to fully secure the higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about entertainment, streaming platforms, and cultural employment. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'subscriptions', 'proponents', and 'employment', alongside appropriate topic-related terms like 'directors', 'producers', and 'vendors'. However, lexical control is inconsistent. There are a few spelling errors, such as 'differeing' instead of 'differing' and 'imporatnce' instead of 'importance', as well as minor stylistic lapses like 'economical reasons' where 'economic reasons' is more precise. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty, but they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a more precise and flexible level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully in sentences such as 'Some believe that theatres are no longer important as people can stream all kinds of entertainment online'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including prepositional choices and article use, such as writing 'on both the sides' instead of 'on both sides' and 'out society' instead of 'our society'. Punctuation is also slightly loose in long sentences without commas to break up clauses. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the majority of complex structures to remain clear and understandable.
