Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the decline of cinemas due to online platforms and their ongoing economic and cultural importance, while also providing a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times repetitive. For instance, the discussion on online streaming focuses heavily on listing platforms like 'Netflix, JioHotstar, Amazon-Prime video' rather than fully exploring the broader cultural implications. Similarly, the arguments supporting physical cinemas mention mental health and social experiences, but these points remain under-developed and lack extended support or specific, well-reasoned examples. To move to a higher band, the writer would need to extend their ideas with deeper explanations and more comprehensive elaboration on both sides of the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some overall organization with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, the two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical links between ideas are frequently mechanical or missing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as starting multiple sentences with 'cause' or 'One more reason is'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, leaving the reader to deduce connections between loosely strung statements. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion needs significant strengthening. To achieve a higher band, the writer must employ a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure a smoother, more logical progression of ideas from one sentence to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'artificial intelligence' and 'cultural growth', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form, including 'casue', 'preffered', 'entertaintment', 'paltforms', 'falbious', and 'wating'. These lexical inaccuracies and persistent spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede fluent communication. To progress, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire, pay closer attention to standard English spelling, and use word forms and collocations more precisely in context, moving beyond basic repetitive terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, these are frequently faulty and poorly controlled, often resulting in run-on structures or fragmented thoughts, such as in the sentence beginning with 'Nowdays , there are many smart devices...'. There are frequent errors in grammar, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'people has' and 'dhurandhar movies in theater or cienam is', missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and faulty punctuation. These frequent errors disrupt the flow of reading and can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence boundaries, reducing grammatical errors, and employing a wider mix of accurate simple and complex structures.
