Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially and fails to meet the required minimum length, containing only 164 words instead of the expected 250. While the student attempts to discuss both views regarding the role of cinemas versus online entertainment and offers a brief personal opinion, the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. For example, the argument that theatres give a 'sense of community' is introduced in the third paragraph but left undeveloped without sufficient supporting details or clear explanation. The position is somewhat discernible in the conclusion, but the overall development is restricted due to the severely truncated length, which prevents a full discussion of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization apparent with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, yet the internal flow of ideas is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat mechanical or repetitive manner, as seen with the recurring transitional phrase 'On the other hand' used incorrectly at the start of the first paragraph and again in the third. Referencing is also unclear at times, particularly in the opening sentence where the thought is incomplete and fails to establish a logical anchor for the rest of the text, preventing smoother transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common expressions such as 'revolutionized the idea of entertainment' and 'cultural values', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'culturlly' contains a spelling mistake, and phrases like 'easy-to-go entertainment option' and 'waste a lot of time as well' demonstrate awkward phrasing and lexical inaccuracy. These limitations cause some minor difficulty for the reader in fully grasping the intended meaning, reflecting a vocabulary range that struggles to achieve precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly constructed complex forms. Frequent errors are present in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles. For example, in the second paragraph, the student writes 'people now rely on easy to access entertainment they watch movies online and save their time', which results in a run-on sentence structure with missing punctuation. Additionally, agreement errors such as 'theatres and cinemas were a major part... as it gives sense of community' (mixing plural subjects with singular pronouns) and missing articles before nouns cause noticeable difficulty and strain for the reader.
