Student answer (Band 8.0)

While online streaming platforms have made a vast array of media accessible from home, some argue that physical entertainment venues like theatres and cinemas are no longer necessary. However, others maintain that these traditional venues remain vital to society and economic growth. This essay will examine both perspectives before explaining why I believe physical venues continue to serve an essential role.

On the one hand, proponents of digital streaming argue that physical venues have lost their relevance due to the overwhelming convenience and affordability of online media. Streaming platforms allow viewers to access vast libraries of films and recorded performances instantly without leaving their homes. This eliminates the need to buy costly event tickets, pay for transportation, or adhere to fixed screening schedules. Furthermore, subscription models make high-quality entertainment accessible to a broader demographic, making home viewing a far more practical choice for many modern consumers.

On the other hand, traditional cinemas and theatres offer cultural, social, and economic value that home streaming cannot replicate. The sensory atmosphere created by massive screens, high-fidelity sound, or live stage performances provides an immersive experience that television screens lack. Moreover, attending these venues is a communal activity where shared reactions—such as laughing or experiencing suspense with an audience—foster social connection. Economically, ticket sales directly support live performers, production crews, and local hospitality businesses, generating employment and tax revenues that digital streaming platforms rarely replace at the local level.

In conclusion, although online streaming offers undeniable convenience and cost savings, physical theatres and cinemas remain irreplaceable. Because they provide unique communal experiences and drive local economic development, both venues continue to play a vital role in modern society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear position throughout that physical venues remain essential despite the rise of digital alternatives. Both sides of the argument are examined thoughtfully, and the writer's own opinion is seamlessly integrated. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant explanations regarding convenience, sensory experience, and economic impact. The response shows a tendency to generalise slightly in places, but overall, it demonstrates a strong ability to address the prompt fully and maintain a well-supported stance from the introduction to the concluding paragraph, fitting the criteria for this strong level well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with a balanced introduction, moving to individual body paragraphs for each opposing view, and concluding with a concise summary. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and naturally, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore', which guide the reader smoothly through the arguments. Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

The writer uses a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Less common items such as 'overwhelming convenience', 'high-fidelity sound', 'communal activity', and 'local hospitality businesses' are employed with a strong awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are precise, and spelling is entirely accurate throughout the text. Only occasional minor inappropriacies in word choice or collocation could be polished to reach the highest possible tier, but the current range allows the writer to convey precise meanings effortlessly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response features a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of control. The majority of sentences are error-free, showcasing sophisticated syntactic variety such as concessive clauses ('While online streaming platforms...') and participial phrases ('generating employment and tax revenues...'). Control of grammar, verb tenses, articles, and punctuation is exceptionally strong, with only very occasional minor slips or awkward constructions that do not detract from the overall clarity and professional tone of the writing.
