Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued by a section of society that in the digital era, the significance of theatres and cinemas is over as individuals can watch any form of entertainment online. While others are of different views that because of economic and cultural benefits, theatres and cinimas are still important. I believe despite of we can watch movies and dramas at home, they are still crusial in our society for different reasons.

On the one hand, proponents of first view say that as we can watch everything online in this modern era, so there is no need of theatres. With the invention of smartphones a lot of ott platforms have been created. Almost all the movies that release in cinimas will eventually be uploaded on these platforms. That is why, they believe that watching movies in theatres is waste of time and money. For example, nowadays, all the Bollywood movies release in theatres first and eventually release on Netflix or Amazon prime. I disagree with this opinion because a person can never get the exact same experience of a movie while watching it on a small screen as compared to big cinema screen.

On the other hand, the proponents of the latter view believe that the economic and cultural significance of cinemas is still very crusial and they are still very important. Because of a cinema, the local small businesses grow which will contribute in the economy of the nation. In addition, they are also a big source to represent the culture and customs of a country. For instance, if a foreigner come to Pakistan and go to a theatre and watch any drama, he will get to know a lot about over culture and society. I agree because the removal of cinemas will drastically demage the small businesses and will cause negative effects on the economy.

In conclusion, although the benefits of watching movies online is quite easy and cheap, but the significance of theatre in boosting the economy and also showcasing the culture of a country is way more than the benefits of attaining entertainment digitally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that theatres are no longer important due to online entertainment, and that they remain economically and culturally significant—while also stating a clear personal position. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, while the economic argument regarding small businesses is introduced, it lacks depth and specific support. The counterarguments and your stance are presented, but certain points, such as the cultural impact, are somewhat generalized and could be extended further with more robust elaboration to reach the higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You make use of standard cohesive devices to structure your thoughts, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion distinctly. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and transitional phrases between sentences within paragraphs could be managed more flexibly to achieve the qualities of the next band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your main arguments regarding entertainment and digital platforms. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'significance', 'proponents', and 'economically', but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reappear throughout the text, including 'cinimas' instead of cinemas, 'crusial' instead of crucial, 'demage' instead of damage, and awkward phrasing like 'despite of we can watch'. These errors demonstrate an unstable grasp of less common lexical items, preventing the writing from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as concessive clauses starting with 'While others are of different views' and conditional examples. There are some grammatical errors and awkward patterns present throughout the response, such as 'despite of we can watch', missing articles like 'a foreigner come' and 'go to theatre', and subject-verb or prepositional slips. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, but they represent the pattern of persistent mistakes characteristic of this level rather than frequent error-free sentences.
