IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The rapid growth of digital entertainment allows people to watch films and shows conveniently from home. While some argue this makes cinemas and theatres obsolete, I believe these venues retain significant economic and cultural value that online platforms cannot replace.
On the one hand, digital platforms offer undeniable convenience and affordability. Streaming services enable users to access a vast library of content anytime without traveling, purchasing expensive tickets, or sticking to fixed schedules. Moreover, advancements in home technology such as high-definition screens and surround sound systems allow families and busy individuals to enjoy a immersive viewing experience from their living rooms.
On the other hand, traditional venues provide vital economic and cultural benefits. Cinemas and theatres generate employment for diverse staff, from technicians to actors and directors. More importantly, they offer a shared social experience that online viewing cannot replicate. Watching a film in a crowded auditorium or attending a live performance fosters a unique sense of collective excitement and emotional connection. Furthermore, theatres preserve cultural heritage by showcasing local plays and historical performances that educate younger generations about their tradition and language.
In my opinion, digital platforms and traditional venues are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. While online streaming caters to daily convenience, live venues provide unique social and emotional engagement that no screen can reproduce.
In conclusion, although digital entertainment offers ease and flexibility, cinemas and theatres remain indispensable for employment, social interaction, and cultural preservation. Therefore, they will continue to play a vital role in modern society alongside digital platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all parts of the task well, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The student addresses both views effectively by discussing the economic and convenience aspects of digital platforms alongside the social, cultural, and economic benefits of traditional venues. Ideas are well developed and extended with relevant explanations, such as mentioning employment generation and cultural heritage preservation. Although the arguments are thoroughly explored, a slightly deeper expansion on the economic impact or specific cultural examples would lift this performance further, bridging the gap toward full and sophisticated development. The position is maintained consistently from the introductory paragraph through to the conclusion, ensuring a well-rounded treatment of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Ideas are logically sequenced and progress naturally from the introduction through the body paragraphs to a clear conclusion. All aspects of cohesion are well managed, utilizing appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments without mechanical repetition. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme: digital convenience, traditional venue benefits, and the student's synthesized opinion. The progression of thought is clear throughout, contributing to a seamless reading experience that meets high organizational standards.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Less common lexical items are used with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'obsolete', 'complementary rather than mutually exclusive', and 'cultural preservation'. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'an immersive' instead of 'a immersive' (which is technically a grammatical article error, but the lexical choices remain precise and appropriate). The vocabulary successfully conveys precise meanings, and spelling throughout the response is entirely accurate, allowing the reader to engage effortlessly with the arguments presented.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The writing exhibits a wide range of complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses and well-managed subordinate structures like 'While some argue this makes cinemas and theatres obsolete, I believe these venues...'. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, showcasing excellent control of grammar, punctuation, and tense consistency. There are only very occasional minor slips, such as the missing article constraint in 'enjoy a immersive viewing experience' (which should be 'an immersive'), but these do not detract from the overall high quality of grammatical execution. Complex grammatical forms are handled with confidence and accuracy throughout.
