Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to discuss both views regarding the relevance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age, the position presented in the introduction is somewhat contradictory, stating an agreement with the decline of cinemas while the body paragraphs ramble between past and present viewing habits. Ideas are limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive points about convenience and online streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney rather than exploring the broader economic and cultural aspects mentioned in the prompt. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to clearly present a well-developed position throughout the essay and extend both sides of the argument with relevant, detailed explanations and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The essay lacks a clear overall progression, with sentences strung together in a continuous block of text rather than being logically grouped into distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are minimal or inaccurate, leading to run-on sentences and a lack of clear referencing between ideas. For instance, transitional phrases are either misused or absent, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of arguments. To improve, the writer must use paragraphing sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, while employing cohesive devices more accurately to link ideas logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring basic terms such as 'important', 'entertainment', 'movies', and 'online'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'threates' instead of 'theatres', 'drams' instead of 'dramas', and phrases like 'watch their programs online while in the comfort zone' or 'used it for many times'. These errors and spelling issues sometimes cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should build a wider and more precise range of vocabulary, incorporating less common lexical items with appropriate collocations and paying closer attention to word spelling and formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, consisting mainly of simple sentences joined loosely by commas or basic conjunctions. Errors are frequent throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'cinemas plays', 'everyone have'), tense consistency (switching between past and present inappropriately), and punctuation. Many attempts at complex sentences result in faulty structures that distort meaning, such as 'now everything are changed' and 'cinemas concept are not end totally'. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures and improve the overall accuracy of clauses, verb forms, and punctuation so that errors rarely impede communication.
