Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this digital era, with rapid technological advancements, online entertainment is gaining a lot of popularity for its easy accessibilty and affordability. While some argue that traditional entertainment through theatres and cinemas are becoming less significant with the emergence of online platforms, others contend that theatres and cinemas still holds cultural and economic significance in the society.

On the one hand, people are opting for digital entertainment sources as they offer considerable benefits. Firstly, it provides easy accessibility and flexibility. For instance, OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime enables easy access to worldwide content through monthly subscriptions. Moreover, an individual can watch any genre of their preference any number of times and as per their convinence. Secondly, it allows for easy affordability. All members of a family can watch the content through a single online platform spending only a limited amount for subscription. This inturn helps save some money instead of spending hefty amounts for a movie ticket for each person in the family.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas are also economically and cuturally imprortant in the society. They project the different customs and traditions that are being followed in a society and bring them to a larger audience. Some people tend to take inspirations from the content that is being shown in the cinemas and apply them in their real life. However, watching movies in theatres is a whole new experience with all the special audio and video effects. Some cinemas also depicts the historical aspects of the past that of tremendous significance in the improvements in the society and helps everyone remember these important events. Also some cinemas are being recognised globally and brings in a lot of economical investments for a nation. In my opinion, although online digital platforms provide convinience, threatres and cinemas are essentiall to embrace cultural values and for the economic growth of the sociey.

To conclude, online sources provides all the entertainment that is needed flexibly with easy accesibility while threaters and cinemas are still important to inclulcate traditional values and to bring in economical improvenments for a society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the rise and benefits of digital entertainment versus the enduring cultural and economic importance of theatres and cinemas—and includes a clear personal opinion in the third paragraph. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the arguments regarding accessibility and affordability in the second paragraph are well-supported with examples like OTT platforms, whereas the cultural points in the third paragraph remain somewhat broad and under-developed, relying on general statements about customs and historical aspects without specific examples. The position is clear throughout, but deeper elaboration on the cultural and economic aspects would be needed to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas across paragraphs, making it easy to follow the writer's line of reasoning. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with clear boundaries separating the introduction, the digital entertainment arguments, the counter-arguments regarding cinemas, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable success, using transition markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude'. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing is at times repetitive, which prevents the response from achieving a higher level of flow and integration.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less-common and topic-specific items such as 'emergence', 'subscriptions', 'genre', and 'economical investments'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that occasionally require the reader to adjust. Examples include spelling errors such as 'accessibilty', 'convinence', 'cuturally', 'imprortant', and 'threatres', as well as grammatical word-form slips like 'essentiall' instead of 'essential'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect typical limitations in lexical precision and accuracy that restrict the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses ('that are being followed', 'that of tremendous significance') and conditional or concessive clauses ('Although online digital platforms provide convinience...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues like 'theatres and cinemas still holds' and 'some cinemas also depicts', as well as minor prepositional and article inconsistencies ('in the society' instead of 'in society', 'helps everyone remember these important events'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication, fitting the mix of accurate and flawed structures characteristic of this level.
