Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and providing a personal opinion, which places the content within the scope of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited and under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions that online platforms save time, the explanation is basic and relies on a simple pausing example. Similarly, the points regarding economic and cultural impacts in the body paragraphs lack sufficient elaboration and specific supporting examples. The student states their position in the introduction and conclusion, but the overall development remains superficial throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates some overall organisation with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically, such as the frequent reliance on transitional markers like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' at the beginning of nearly every point. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas is sometimes disjointed, and referencing between sentences is not always clear, which creates a bumpy reading experience for the evaluator.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic message. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'technologically advanced' and 'conserve the culture', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'cruical' instead of crucial, 'econimcs' instead of economics, 'documantary', and 'boarden screen'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'less cost' instead of lower cost, cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted range of vocabulary suitable for this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'online platform provides', incorrect verb forms like 'can be entertain', article misuse, and awkward prepositions. For instance, phrases like 'infront of desk' and 'going to cinema' demonstrate persistent structural inaccuracies. Punctuation errors are also present, and the frequency of these grammatical slips can cause strain and difficulty for the reader.
