Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Other people argue that thetres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. I belive that cinemas and theatres play an important role both ecnomically and culturally. As they add billions of dollars in the economy of the world, and they make people connected to each other. However, the individuals who believe otherwise have their own reasons, as smart phones and laptops are very common these days, so people do not need to go to cinemas.

In 2025, cinemas and theatres generated 20 billion dollar in USA, which might not be the huge part of their economy, but it is the important one. This is significant because it gives a stable income to the government. Cinemas and theatres are now a necessary part of our culture as well. For instance, whenever any family or friends group wants to go out, they make the whole plan according to what movie they will watch in cinema. Because watching movie together makes them feel close to each other.

In contrast, the cost of watching a movie can be minimized by getting a subscription on netflix or prime videos. It also provide comfort of not going anywhere, and watching any kind of entertainment they want online in their own bed.

In conclusion, we are living in modren age and we have the access of every kind of entertainment. But cinemas and theatres will always be important both economically and culturally, as it is been part of us from decades now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the decline of physical cinemas due to digital streaming and their ongoing economic and cultural importance, while also stating a clear personal position in the introduction. The ideas presented are relevant, but some aspects are noticeably under-developed. For instance, the economic contribution is supported by a specific statistic, yet the explanation remains brief and lacks further exploration. Similarly, the cultural aspect touches upon social bonding through shared movie-watching experiences, but this idea is not fully extended. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to provide deeper elaboration and more sustained support for all main points rather than moving quickly between ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and distinct paragraphs that separate the different viewpoints and the writer's opinion. Progression is generally logical, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing cultural and economic factors, followed by a counterargument. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'In contrast' and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, and paragraphing could be utilized more effectively to group related concepts together. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of linking words more naturally and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient range to communicate basic ideas about entertainment and the economy. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'subscription' and 'entertainment', but struggles with accuracy in word choice and spelling. There are noticeable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'thetres' instead of theatres, 'belive' instead of believe, 'ecnomically' instead of economically, 'modren' instead of modern, and spacing issues such as 'smart phones' and 'netflix'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer needs to expand their control over less common lexical items and pay closer attention to accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and causal clauses, such as 'As they add billions of dollars in the economy of the world, and they make people connected to each other.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including prepositional choice ('in the economy' rather than 'to the economy'), article omission, and awkward phrasing. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and ensure tighter control over punctuation and grammatical agreements, particularly when constructing longer, multi-clause sentences.
