IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding watching movies and fun activities. A group of individuals believes that in this digital world, big screens are not necessary because they can watch everything online. However, others argue that a large indoor room or hall where an audience gathers is still crucial for a country's economic and cultural status. Therefore, in my opinion, everyone should watch movies online at home rather than in a cinema.

Examining the former opinion, the primary argument that supporters would put forward is that there is no need for theatres to watch something. This is because people can see everything in the comfort of their home, and it does not cost them much. For example, if someone wants to watch something but can't afford cinema ticket costs, they can still enjoy that program at home with their friends. As a result, they may enjoy it without paying anything.

On the contrary, those in favour of the latter opinion have their own arguments. To begin with, they can claim that cinematic entertainment centers are still mandatory from an economic as well as cultural perspective. This is mainly because people get to gather in one place and hang out with their loved ones, and get to know their culture more closely. For example, when you go to the cinema, you have an opportunity to watch movies on larger screens in comparison with when you are at home. Consequently, watching movies in a cinema builds shared community experiences and strengthens cultural traditions through collective emotional engagement.

In my opinion, I support the first view because I personally feel more comfortable watching at my house rather than going out somewhere to watch something. Both views have their own merits, but I support the former argument.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the shift to online entertainment and the economic and cultural importance of cinemas, while also stating a clear personal position. However, some ideas are under-developed or rely on general statements rather than deep elaboration. For instance, the discussion on economic and cultural perspectives touches on gathering with loved ones and larger screens, but these points are somewhat repetitive and lack specific, robust examples. The position is stated clearly throughout, particularly in the conclusion and introduction, but the depth of support places the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that follows the prompt's requirements. Logical transitions are used to guide the reader through the different perspectives, such as 'Examining the former opinion' and 'On the contrary'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive in referencing, and some transitional phrases feel slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, opposing viewpoints, and the final conclusion, ensuring the text is easy to follow despite minor flaws in cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main ideas about digital entertainment versus physical cinemas. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'ongoing debate', 'collective emotional engagement', and 'cultural traditions', but there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as referring to movies as 'fun activities' or using 'cinematic entertainment centers' rather than natural phrasing. Spelling and word choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to understand the argument clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses ('if someone wants to watch something but can't afford') and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as minor preposition slips or slight awkwardness in clause integration, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, while attempts at complex structures show a reasonable command of grammar.
