Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that, in this modernized world, people can access all forms of entertainment online, making theaters and cinemas less important, while others argue that they still play a significant role both economically and culturally. In this essay we will explore both the views before presenting my opinion that they are no longer important for people.

On the one hand, in the digital age, most of the people are now dependent on online access for entertainment. For watching series, reality shows, or movies, they prefer to watch these online; they can watch anything entertaining whenever they are free and can continue after their work. However, for watching movies in theaters and cinema halls, individuals have to sit for long hours, and they have to make special time to go there.

On the other hand, theaters and cinema halls are important for the aspects of economics and culture. More the number of people more will be economy through ticket sales, food, and beverages. It will also provide employment opportunities for cleaning staff, guards, and other workers for the maintenance of the infrastructure. Moreover, cinema can provide the information of history and culture, which people can watch and can share the same experience together.

In conclusion, I reckon that although theaters and cinemas play a significant role in economy and culture. However, because of the access to the internet and online websites, people can watch them without paying extra for tickets and without making special time to watch a movie. Therefore, cinemas and theaters are no longer important for people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether theaters and cinemas remain important and provides a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the economic benefits of cinemas are mentioned rather superficially with phrases like "More the number of people more will be economy," which lacks detailed extension. The position is maintained throughout the essay, but the arguments regarding online convenience versus traditional viewing could be supported with more specific examples to reach a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, utilizing standard transition signals such as "On the one hand," "On the other hand," and "In conclusion." However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes mechanical. For example, the sentence "More the number of people more will be economy through ticket sales" disrupts the flow due to awkward structural linkage. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their main ideas successfully. There are attempts to use less common items such as "employment opportunities," "infrastructure," and "modernized world." However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and unidiomatic word choices, such as writing "more will be economy" instead of "the economy will grow," and phrasing like "provide the information of history and culture." Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present throughout the text, such as missing articles in "provide the information of history," structural slips in "In this essay we will explore both the views," and an incomplete dependent clause in the conclusion starting with "Although... However,". Fortunately, these errors in grammar and punctuation rarely impede overall communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments easily.
