Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent times, some people believe that theatre and cinemas are not important because of digital age because people can watch all the entertainment online. Whereas, others argue that these are important as people are culturally connected to them and it is economically important as well. I believe both sides because from each perspective they are correct.

First, people who believe cinemas are no longer crucial for entertainment as they can watch it online. Nowadays, every form of entertainment can be seen online which saves people from planning with their loved ones and going to cinema and watch it at home. Moreover, it is efficient and affordable than any cinema and theatre. People can watch their content without any disturbance. For instance while watching movie in cinema children noises can be heard but while watching the same content at home can not be disturbed by anyone.

On the other hand, cinema and theatre are important for both economy and culture. As theatres charge the fees for entry to an entertainment that same fees is used to pay taxes and salaries to the employees which keeps the economy running whereas, these places become a platform where people celebrate their favorite actor's movies. For example In southern part of India movies are a cultural symbol, where people celebrate the movies like festivals. Also through movies cultural stories are also enacted and shown to people which connects them to their roots.

In conclusion, people may believe that watching entertainment from home is good while others might argue about importance of theatre and cinema because of economy and culture. I personally believe it is up to the person to decide their preference.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether theatres and cinemas remain important in the digital age and includes a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed, particularly in the discussion on online entertainment versus traditional venues. For instance, the point regarding efficiency and affordability is stated simply without extension or detailed examples. Furthermore, the final opinion is somewhat evasive rather than taking a clear stance, which keeps the response at this level. To improve, the writer needs to expand on their arguments with deeper explanations and more robust real-world examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a basic overall arrangement with clear paragraphing separating the introduction, the two body paragraphs, and the conclusion. However, progression is somewhat restricted by repetitive phrasing and simplistic transitions, such as 'First' and 'On the other hand'. Cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or inaccurate, as seen in the transition 'Whereas, others argue' where 'whereas' is used incorrectly to start a sentence fragment. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, leaving relationships between sentences less cohesive than necessary. To move up, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to express basic ideas about cinemas and online streaming. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'efficient', 'affordable', and 'cultural symbol', but these are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'watching movie in cinema children noises can be heard' instead of 'auditory distractions from children'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'charge the fees for entry to an entertainment'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must incorporate a wider range of precise, less common lexical items and demonstrate better control over collocation and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('going to cinema'), pluralisation issues ('children noises'), and incorrect prepositions or conjunctions ('because of digital age'). Punctuation errors and run-on constructions also occur, such as in the final sentence of the first body paragraph. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures while significantly reducing basic errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries.
