Student answer (Band 6.0)

While, in the digital age contemporary theatres and cinemas are not as significant because people can watch all the entertainment they want online, some may argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

It is true that in this era of technological advancement the theaters and cinemas are no longer as important, everyone can now easily entertain themselves from the comfort of their homes. People are required to follow certain protocols in order to watch a movie or a show in theaters and cinemas, for instance: booking tickets, travelling to the cinema and then buying popcorns seperately. In this century life is very fast, everyone is busy and due to the lack of time they want something quick and hassel free that can be enjoyed at their comfort.

Conversely, some people argue that cinemas and theaters are still significant mainly because they are important for preserving the culture. Cinemas and theaters act as a visual time capsule that records and protects languages, traditions, and societal norms for future generations. Watching cultural stories helps younger generations feel connected to their roots and take pride in their heritage. Global audiences learn about different customs and beliefs, which builds international empathy and respect. Moreover, theaters are significant for the economy as they give employment to hundreds of people.

In conclusion, although the digital era of entertainmnet is prefered by people rather than going to theaters and cinemas due to its feasibility and affordability, but theaters and cinemas are still important for the cultural preservation, international respect and more importantly it is the source of employment for many people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the decline of theatres in the digital age versus their ongoing economic and cultural importance—and presents a clear personal opinion throughout. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which places the response in the mid-range for this criterion. For instance, the economic benefits of cinemas are mentioned briefly with the point that they 'give employment to hundreds of people,' but this idea lacks elaboration and specific examples. To reach a higher level, the writer should extend and support all main arguments with deeper explanations or concrete illustrations, rather than relying on brief assertions. The position is consistently clear, but a more balanced and thoroughly supported exploration of both perspectives would elevate the task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction, through the opposing views, to a distinct concluding summary. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate distinct themes, such as the convenience of online viewing versus the cultural value of cinemas. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, the transition in the conclusion ('although the digital era of entertainmnet is prefered... but theaters and cinemas...') results in a grammatical clash and an awkward cohesive link. Referencing and conjunctions are sometimes overused or imprecise. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that sentences flow together smoothly without structural awkwardness between clauses.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'technological advancement,' 'visual time capsule,' and 'societal norms.' There are, however, some spelling and word-choice errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'seperately,' 'hassel,' 'entertainmnet,' and 'prefered.' While these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. Furthermore, collocations could be more precise; for example, 'feasibility and affordability' might be better expressed as 'convenience and cost-effectiveness.' To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their range of less common vocabulary while focusing on accurate spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'Cinemas and theaters act as a visual time capsule that records and protects languages...' There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly regarding article use ('in theaters and cinemas' without plural/singular consistency) and comma splices or conjunction clashes, as seen in the final sentence where 'although' is incorrectly paired with 'but.' Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress to a higher band, the writer must increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation and prepositional patterns.
