Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some limitations in how the ideas are developed. The student attempts to discuss both views and gives a personal opinion, which is stated in the introduction with phrases like 'From my prespective, cinema halls are no longer [important]'. However, the development of ideas lacks clarity and consistency. For instance, the second paragraph attempts to argue that people go to cinemas because internet subscriptions are too expensive, but this is contradicted by claims about screen quality. The position throughout the essay is not always clear, and some arguments are repetitive or under-developed, particularly when discussing economic versus cultural aspects. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully explored with distinct, well-supported arguments rather than repetitive assertions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the essay, with clear paragraph breaks separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or inadequate. For example, transition phrases like 'On the other hand' and 'For example' are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'it make movies more interseting'. Additionally, the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs is disrupted by abrupt shifts in focus, such as mixing internet affordability with screen size in the same paragraph. Achieving a higher band would require more skilful and varied cohesive devices, clearer referencing, and a stronger, more logical progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to convey basic meaning. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'digitalization' and 'accessibility', but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form. Examples include spelling errors like 'threatres', 'prespective', 'becasue', 'individiual', and 'interseting', as well as awkward phrasing like 'subscription of the internet'. These errors and limited lexical flexibility cause some difficulty for the reader at times. To progress, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and focus on natural collocations and precise word choices suited to an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic complex forms. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are persistent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'cinemas halls still important', 'price of tickets for threatres are less as commpare to', and 'if an individual travelling he can enjoy movies whilr travelling'. Punctuation is also occasionally mishandled, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. To achieve a higher score, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures and improve basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding verb tenses and agreement.
