Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many are of the opinion that in the modern world, theatre plays and movie theatres have lost significance due to availability of all desired shows through the internet. Others dissent by stating that they retain importance through economical and cultural impact. The ubiquity of internet has indeed made going to the these places an optional choice due to there being high quality video recordings online. However the presence of theatres and cinemas create a whole sector of jobs while bringing substantial profits and bring people together which has cosiderable impact on the economy and culture. That is why I opine that they are still important.

Internet makes any digital media very easy to access. The plays in theatres can be recorded using a camera to create a video. Movies on the other hand are videos in the first place. These videos can in turn be uploaded to the internet where people can access them either for free or by paying a certain fee. Naturally, this made travelling to the theatres not absolutely necessary. However, state that theatres and cinemas are not necessary just from this undermines the experience of watching a play perfomed right in front of you or movie watched in giant screens and ambiance that are not possible for regular people to replicate and shows that the speaker's understanding of the experience is superficial. Also they do not understand how many jobs are created through the existence of these institutions and how much profit is created by the selling of tickets.

The theatres are cinemas sell tickets to give entry to the audince. The price of tickets is significantly higher than the fee of watching online. So when people watch the shows in person it brings more revenue for the makers. This profit leads to more shows, more theatres and in turn a boon for economy through the jobs created. One might argue that why would someone pay more to watch in person when they can pay less to watch from the comfort of home. This again brings the point previously made that the experience of watching in a threatre is so novel that people are willing to pay more. Shows are usually only made available online after in person viewership declines. Also the act of bringing people together in person lives a lasting impression whitch makes more impact culturally than online viewrship could. To illustrate this, let us consider "The Avengers: End Game" movie. This movie sent people in a frenzy even before anyone saw it. People were lining up for hours just to get a chance of buying a ticket. Both social media and in person discussions were occupied by this movie all while it was only availe to watch on cinemas. It made more than a billion dollars in a few weeks in theatres.

In conclusion, although online platforms have made going to theatres or cinemas less imperative the impact they have both on economy and culture can not be ignored. They not only help the shows gain influence but also benefits everyone involved financially.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that cinemas and theatres are losing importance due to online media, and that they remain economically and culturally vital—while clearly stating your own position. You extend and support your ideas, such as when you mention employment generation and ticket revenues, and you even provide a specific example regarding the film 'The Avengers: End Game'. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the redundant explanations of why tickets cost more and how cameras record plays. To reach the next level, you need to ensure that every main idea is fully explored with deeper analysis and fewer repetitive arguments throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your essay has a clear overall progression and logically moves from the introduction to discussing online accessibility, economic factors, cultural impacts, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly faulty, with transitional phrases like 'The theatres are cinemas sell tickets' containing a typo, and some referencing that lacks smoothness. For example, sentences in the third paragraph jump between ticket pricing and cultural impact without seamless signposting. To improve further, you should work on using a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is consistently clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'ubiquity of internet', 'novel', and 'cultural impact'. However, there are noticeable lexical resource errors regarding word choice, collocation, and spelling that surface throughout the essay. Examples include writing 'going to the these places', 'perfomed', 'giant screens' instead of 'on giant screens', 'cosiderable', 'whitch', and 'availe'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they prevent you from achieving a higher band. To elevate your lexical score, you must focus on precise word choices, accurate collocations, and careful proofreading to eliminate basic spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'However the presence of theatres and cinemas create a whole sector of jobs while bringing substantial profits...'. There are, however, some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing commas after introductory transition words ('However', 'In conclusion'), subject-verb agreement issues ('theatres and cinemas create' versus 'The theatres are cinemas sell'), and prepositional slips like 'watch from the comfort of home'. These errors rarely impede communication, keeping your writing at a solid mid-level. To improve your grammatical range and accuracy, you should focus on tighter control over complex sentence structures and more careful punctuation.
