Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the popularity of cinemas and theaters is getting down with the innovation in digital media, as individuals can get all the entertainment with the help of this. While some argue that cinemas and theaters still contribute to the economy and culture. I fully agree with the latter argument.

On the one hand, the importance of cinemas and theaters is decreasing due to the technological advancements in digital media. People can get access to all types of entertainment with minimal cost, which will plummet the reputation of entertainment attained from the cinemas and theaters. For instance, Netflix and Amazon Prime are two very popular online service providers with a very small subscription for their viewers, which will encourage the people to buy cheap subscriptions to watch movies and seasons rather than buying special tickets for cinemas and theaters. The next important factor is that people do not want to commute to these places for their amusement, as it requires a lot of effort, so they find it much convinient to find it online at home.

On the other hand, the revenue generated from cinemas and theaters contributes to the economy and culture. The reason for this is that people will invest in the tickets that will greatly benefit the filmmakers and the cinema's authority, due to which much better movies and shows will be produced, which I fully support.

In the end, people should support their entertainers by investing a significant portion of their money in cinemas and theaters, which will boost the production quality of those entertainment media.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the decline of cinemas due to digital streaming and their ongoing economic and cultural importance—while also stating a clear position. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the paragraph explaining the economic and cultural benefits lacks specific examples or robust elaboration, relying instead on a brief assertion that ticket sales help filmmakers produce better shows. Additionally, the opening sentence contains a fragmented structure where the second sentence starts with 'While' but lacks a main clause to complete the thought, which slightly blurs the presentation of the writer's position at the outset. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to provide deeper, more thoroughly supported arguments for each viewpoint, ensuring that every main point is backed by concrete explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct views, with the first body paragraph tackling digital entertainment and the second addressing economic and cultural value. Nevertheless, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly with transitional phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear; for instance, phrases such as 'with the help of this' lack a clear, precise antecedent in the preceding sentence, forcing the reader to guess the exact reference. To improve cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that pronoun referencing is always sharp and unambiguous throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's basic message. There are attempts to incorporate less common vocabulary, such as 'technological advancements', 'subscription', and 'revenue generated', which shows a reasonable breadth of topic-specific terms. However, some word choices and collocations are slightly imprecise, such as saying popularity is 'getting down' instead of declining or decreasing, and there is a spelling error with the word 'convinient' instead of convenient. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but they restrict the response from achieving a higher level. To elevate the lexical resource, the student should focus on refining word choices, ensuring correct word forms, and using natural collocations consistently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively. There are instances of good control over complex sentence patterns, such as 'People can get access to all types of entertainment with minimal cost, which will plummet the reputation...'. However, several grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including article misuse ('the cinemas and theaters' where 'cinemas and theatres' is general), preposition errors ('invest in the tickets'), and pluralisation slips. Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication and the reader can easily follow the argument. To move up, the writer needs to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and tighten control over articles and prepositions within complex grammatical patterns.
