Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain people argue that in this age of technology and digital media, the need for cinema and theatres have diminished. Others think that they are still necessary for boosting economy and culture. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe both approaches have their own advantages.

On the one hand people believe that in modern age of cell phones, there is no need for cinema and theatre. This is mainly due to the convenience that digital media provides for people who want to watch a movie or TV shows. People can now watch a movie alone or with their friends, without waiting for the release in cinema. Furthermore, the flexiblity and variety of content that online platforms like netlix and HBO provide is quite fascinating. The priviledge to watch a full movie, with subtitles in any language, and being able to pause whenever you want is unmatched.

On the other hand, critics argue that theatres and movie cinemas are still important to boost local economy and preserve our ancestral culture. I believe that no feeling can come close to watching your favourite TV star on a big screen. The cultural practice of buying popcorns and finding the right seats to sit beside your friends is purely nostalgic. The film industry produces significant revenue for entire economy, Hence, the importance of cinemas and theatres is quite clear.

In conclusion, although the digital media and technological advancements have greater flexiblity and convenience, the need to preserve cultural value of cinemas cannot be neglected.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—the shift towards digital entertainment and the enduring economic and cultural value of cinemas—and presents a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the economic argument mentioned in the third paragraph ("The film industry produces significant revenue for entire economy") is left rather general and lacks specific supporting examples or elaboration. Similarly, the transition between discussing the cultural value and concluding the paragraph feels slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to extend and support all arguments more evenly and deeply, ensuring every main point is thoroughly explained with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement and clear progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct side of the argument, and the final paragraph providing a clear summary. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as "On the one hand," "On the other hand," and "In conclusion." However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother, particularly in how ideas link internally within the body paragraphs. To move towards a higher level, the writer should employ more flexible and subtle cohesive ties rather than relying heavily on standard signposting phrases, ensuring seamless transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's meaning throughout the essay. The student attempts less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as "ancestral culture," "convenience," and "technological advancements." However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word-choice inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as "flexiblity" (flexibility), "netlix" (Netflix), and "priviledge" (privilege). Additionally, phrases like "boosting economy" lack the necessary article, and some collocations could be more precise. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over less common lexical items, eliminate spelling errors, and ensure accurate word choice and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as dependent clauses introduced by "although" and "while." There is a reasonable attempt to vary sentence openings and lengths. However, several grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., "the need for cinema and theatres have diminished," where 'need' requires 'has') and missing articles (e.g., "for entire economy"). Punctuation and minor structural slips also appear, such as the incorrect comma placement and capitalization errors. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they occur with enough frequency to keep the score at this level. To improve, the student needs to exercise greater control over complex sentence patterns and carefully check subject-verb agreements and article usage.
