Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent times a major ongoing debate is on the importance of theatres and cinemas. Many people argue that in this digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. In my point of view theatres and cinemas still hold a significant importance.
To begin with the first narrative, which states that theatres and cinemas holds no significance in this digital age. Majority from many age group including kids, teenagers and adults actually prefer watching online and whatever is convenient for them as it saves the time and cost both. It is quite practical as well because techonology has made everything so easy and hassle free specially for people who want entertainment but are occupied with their duties. For instance a working woman whose main goal is to balance work life and personal life has a convenient way to binge watch anything at her home becuase techonology is literally at the door steps.
Some people do understand the cultural and economic significance of theatres and cinenas. Specially if we go up the heiarchy and see consumer groups they still go to the cinemas and theatres. If we specifically talk about theatres so a particular section of consumer still understands its relevance and importance and they mostly are from high class. This is how the societies work for instance the plays of shakespere such as hamlet is still played in many thetres around the world and people who are brought up in high classes in will always appreciate it's culture. Moving onto the cinemas houses so they contribute to the economy which online platforms fail to do so as they prices and people who actually want a cinematic experience will go and purchase and ticket as many people value experience over cost and they feel that it is worth the hassle. Recently the final edition of spiderman just released and all of the cinemas were completely booked.
To sum it all, digital age does provides convenience and substitues of the cinemas and theatres but as we know nowadays people can't experience the same thing on repeat thats why both economically and culturally cinemas and theatres are relevant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and providing a clear personal position at the outset and in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first body paragraph touches upon convenience and time-saving aspects, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack strong supporting evidence. The third paragraph attempts to explore economic and cultural significance by mentioning Shakespeare and the release of Spider-Man, but these points are underdeveloped and overly generalised. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all main ideas with more robust explanations and specific examples rather than brief mentions. Note that 32 words copied directly from the task prompt were excluded from the official word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the writing is divided into distinct paragraphs. Progression is visible, moving from the initial stance to the opposing view and then to cultural and economic aspects. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph starting with 'Some people do understand the cultural and economic significance of theatres and cinenas. Specially if we go up the heiarchy...'. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or repetitively, such as the heavy reliance on transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Moving onto'. Improving the logical bridges between sentences and varying cohesive devices would elevate this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'substitutes', 'significance', and 'hierachy' (though misspelled). There are several noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form throughout the response, such as 'techonology' instead of 'technology', 'becuase' instead of 'because', 'shakespere' instead of 'Shakespeare', and 'cinenas' instead of 'cinemas'. Additionally, phrases like 'the final edition of spiderman just released' show minor collocation and phrasing awkwardness. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but to achieve a higher score, the writer must demonstrate greater control over less common vocabulary, ensure accurate spelling, and refine collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. Issues include missing articles ('in my point of view', 'purchase and ticket'), incorrect prepositions ('plays of shakespere such as hamlet is still played'), and run-on or comma-splice tendencies, such as in the final sentence of the second paragraph ('For instance a working woman...'). Punctuation is also weak in places, such as missing apostrophes in contractions or possessives ('it's culture'). To progress, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences and tighten control over basic agreement and article usage.
