IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many think that theatres and cinemas have become less important due to the availability of online entertainment. Others believe these traditional modes of entertainment are important both economically and culturally. I agree with the first statement because it can save time, energy and money.
With the advancement in technology, people can watch any movie or drama at home while sitting comfortably in their bedroom. For example, a person who goes to the office daily has only the weekend to relax. Due to their busy schedule, they can watch their favourite show on their mobile phone, laptop, or television after completing all household chores. There is no need to worry about missing the show or visiting the cinema personally. This choice of freedom and convenience may lead to more physical and mental relaxation. That is why this reduces the importance of theatres or cinemas, as they have become outdated.
However, other people argue that these traditional entertainment sources have much significance in economic and cultural aspects. For example, people can visit these places with their families and friends. So, they can gather in one place and spend time together, which can strengthen their relationships. Additionally, they have to buy tickets to watch a movie or a show. That money can be used to maintain these places. This ultimately can contribute to the economic and cultural aspects of retaining old values.
In my opinion, there are many other problems to focus on. The government should allocate some budget to keep these places. But these places aren't that valuable for people to focus on. Trends, routines and priorities of new generations have outgrown them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views and providing a clear position agreeing with the first statement. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the body paragraph supporting online entertainment includes clear examples like office workers and weekend routines, the counter-argument regarding economic and cultural significance is somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on generic points about gathering with family and maintaining venues. The conclusion briefly touches upon government allocation and shifting generational priorities, but these ideas remain basic and lack extended support. To reach a higher band, the writer would need to fully develop all parts of the argument with more detailed examples and deeper analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory stance, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding opinion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'For example', 'Additionally', and 'In my opinion'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between discussing the economic value of ticket sales and concluding that paragraph with 'retaining old values' lacks smooth logical progression. Furthermore, paragraphing is utilised, but the flow between the final body paragraph and the conclusion could be better integrated to ensure a stronger overarching progression throughout the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the writer's ideas. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'advancement in technology', 'economic and cultural aspects', and 'allocate some budget', but these show occasional inaccuracy or rely on standard collocations rather than precise academic phrasing. There are some minor word choice limitations, such as 'choice of freedom' instead of 'freedom of choice', but these do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a wider, more flexible range of sophisticated lexical items and idioms with tighter control over word choice and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like subordinate clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'Due to their busy schedule, they can watch their favourite show...' and 'For example, a person who goes to the office daily has only the weekend to relax.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'That is why this reduces the importance' and minor prepositions, but they rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are accurate, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable control. To move up, the writer needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate more varied syntactic control.
