Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views on cinemas and stating a personal opinion, which satisfies the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas remains limited and under-developed throughout. For instance, the argument about internet streaming is restricted to basic statements such as 'everything could be found on internet' without exploring deeper economic or cultural implications. The personal opinion is partially supported through a personal anecdote about a recent cinema visit, but the discussion tends to rely on generalisations rather than fully extended arguments. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to provide more thorough explanations and well-supported examples for both perspectives instead of briefly touching upon them.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and the overall progression is discernible. However, the cohesive devices used are frequently inadequate, repetitive, or mechanically applied, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'In Contrast' and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs lack internal cohesion and smooth links between sentences, particularly in the body sections where sentences often feel disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, which disrupts the flow of ideas. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure that each paragraph develops a single clear theme with logical transitions connecting the thoughts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for discussing the topic. The writer demonstrates a basic range of words, attempting some less common vocabulary such as 'digitalized' and 'inherent nature', but these attempts are accompanied by notable errors in word form, choice, and spelling, such as 'convinent', 'ingulged', 'Aw full', and 'un memorable'. There are also issues with collocations and phrasing, for example, 'staying home all the time' rather than staying at home. These lexical errors sometimes cause slight difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, use words with greater precision, and pay closer attention to standard spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordination. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, these are frequently faulty, such as the fragmented opening clause 'The statement, that whether the theatres and cinemas are still important or not has mixed opinions.' Frequent grammatical errors occur in articles, prepositions, punctuation, and tense consistency, including 'on internet', 'at staying home', and shifts between past and present tenses. These errors are frequent and can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures while improving accuracy in basic grammar patterns and punctuation.
