Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on the importance of theatres and cinemas versus online entertainment, while also presenting a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the arguments for online streaming are reasonably elaborated with examples like saving travel costs and watching live events such as the IPL and FIFA World Cup, the counter-arguments regarding the cultural value and economic benefits of physical cinemas are rather limited and under-developed, relying on brief assertions rather than extended explanation. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that all main points receive equal and thorough elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear chronological progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the contrasting views. Nevertheless, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. The writer uses basic transition markers such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', but referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the pronoun 'They' in the second body paragraph shifting abruptly in reference. Additionally, some cohesive devices feel repetitive and formulaic. Enhancing the variety and subtlety of cohesive links would improve the flow between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to entertainment. Attempts are made to use less common items, such as 'subcription', 'nemurous', and 'signioficant', but these are hindered by noticeable spelling and word choice errors. There are also frequent slips in word formation and collocation, such as 'watch online' instead of 'watching content online' or 'derits' instead of 'demerits'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they restrict the response. To achieve a higher score, the student must broaden their vocabulary range while improving spelling accuracy and precision in word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordinate clauses and conditional constructions. However, there is a limited overall range of structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. Grammatical errors are apparent throughout, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('It often agrue', 'these facility also save'), article usage ('on their Tv with famly'), and prepositions. While communication is rarely completely blocked, these recurring structural inaccuracies can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and polishing basic grammatical control will elevate this criterion.
