Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is an ongoing debate whether cinemas and theatres are no more significant in modern age while the others believe that cinemas are still worthy in economic and cultural terms. In my opinion, mobile phone has many benefits such as more convenient and lower cost but cinemas and theatres also has several advantages including promotes culture, entertainment and relaxation which mobile phones cannot out weigh.

One of the major benefits of cinemas is culture promotion. Local films can promote the culture of a country and encourage the people of the country to learn about their culture. For instance, people can learn about their culture from the films like Angrej and Rabb da radio.

Another benefit of cinemas is entertainment and relaxation. Because, cinemas can provide different type of movies and can help people to reduce stress after a busy day. For example, people can usually go to a cinema after their work or job to release their stress and relax their mind.

Besides cinemas and theatres, mobile phones are more convenient. Unlike cinemas, people can watch different type of movies while sitting at home and whenever they want. For example, people can watch different movies with their family members and friends while sitting at their homes. Another benefit of mobile phones is lower cost. Because people can watch premium content by just paying a little fair and can also share with their friends but in cinemas, people have to buy tickets which can be costly for the middle and lower class people. For example, people can watch latest movies in premium quality by buying and account on Netflix and Prime Videos.

To conclude, mobile phones have many benefits such as convenient but the cinemas can provide wide range of facilities such as entertainment and cultural promotion which can not be out dated by the modern era.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the decline of theatres and cinemas due to online entertainment and their ongoing economic and cultural importance, while also presenting a personal position. However, some ideas remain under-developed. For example, while the writer mentions cultural promotion, the explanation relies heavily on simple examples like the films 'Angrej' and 'Rabb da radio' without extending the argument further. Similarly, the discussion of the economic side of cinemas versus mobile phones touches on ticket costs and subscriptions, but lacks deeper exploration. The position is generally clear throughout the text, but the supporting points would benefit from greater depth and elaboration to move towards a more fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the discussion into distinct paragraphs addressing different aspects of the topic, such as cultural promotion, entertainment, and mobile phone benefits. Cohesive devices are used, although referencing and linking are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'For example' and 'Another benefit'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate ideas, but the progression between paragraphs could be smoother and more logically integrated. While the relationships between ideas are generally understandable, the occasional awkward transitions prevent the organisation from achieving a fully clear and logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'cultural promotion', 'relaxation', and 'premium content'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, phrases like 'no more significant in modern age' and 'paying a little fair' instead of 'fare' reveal awkward phrasing and lexical control issues. Spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'out weigh' and 'out dated', occur, though they do not seriously impede overall communication. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of precise phrasing and demonstrate greater accuracy in word formation and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response shows a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'cinemas also has several advantages', missing articles, and preposition errors within grammatical patterns. Faulty sentence structures also appear, such as in the opening sentence and in fragments like 'Because, cinemas can provide...'. While the meaning is generally communicated despite these lapses, the presence of frequent errors across basic and complex structures means the control over grammar remains limited.
