Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe theatres and cinemas are no longer important in today's digital age, as people can access all the entertainment from the comfort of their homes online. However, many have the opposite view and believe that theatres and cinemas are important, both economically and culturally.
Having the means to watch various shows and movies online has its own advantages. It provides a wide database to watch shows or movies of any genre. It also saves time travelling to the theatres and cinemas.
But at the same time, it also creates a risk of easy accessibilty to various content online to the younger population and thus requires strict parental control for it.
However, I strongly side with its importance towards the economy and our roots and culture. It is neccessary that people of the next generations get to experience the world of theatre and cinema. In today's busy world, it helps bring people together. For example, in my family everyone is busy with work almost all the time, but a good movie in the theatre helps us spend some time quality together, rather than watching it individually in our own rooms.
It also is significant in terms of economic growth. The theartrical potrayals and cinemas help generate revenue both nationally and internationally.
For example, a recognised face from the industry can be offered a brand ambassadorship for different brands and causes which can prove to be helpful at national and international levels.
In conclusion, just like coins have two sides, this also has its positive side as well as negative side and it is upto us to decide what's best for us.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the decline of theatres and cinemas in the digital age and their ongoing economic and cultural importance, while also stating a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the points regarding economic growth and family bonding are relevant, some ideas are somewhat under-developed or tangential, such as the sudden mention of online content risks and parental control, which shifts focus away from the core prompt. To reach a higher band, all parts of the argument would need to be equally extended and supported with clearer, more focused examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, ensuring the general flow of ideas is understandable. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat repetitive, relying on standard transition words like 'However' and 'For example' rather than a smoother, more sophisticated progression of logic. Paragraphing is used, though some paragraphs could be organized more effectively to group related ideas together. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional abrupt shifts between points prevent the essay from achieving a fully seamless logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their main ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items and industry-related vocabulary, such as 'brand ambassadorship' and 'theatrical portrayals', though these are occasionally accompanied by minor word-choice or spelling inaccuracies, such as 'accessibilty' and 'potrayals'. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a level of vocabulary control that sits securely within this tier. To progress further, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise, sophisticated lexical items and idioms with greater accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing structures such as conditional and concessive clauses to express ideas. There are some errors in grammar and mechanics, including spelling slips like 'neccessary', minor punctuation oversights, and occasional awkward phrasing such as 'spend some time quality together'. However, these grammatical and structural errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of the sentences remain clear and comprehensible. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate finer control over punctuation and word order.
