IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The arguments that in the current digital era movies are not as significant as they were before because of its easy availablity and the other that demonstrates its prominence in cultural and economical aspect are both equally valid.

With the increase in online streaming platforms, it is not as mandatory for every individual to go to the theatres to watch a movie. It enables the audience to experience the art form at the convenience of their own home. A consideration that must be taken into account is the pricing of the ticket to watch the movie, and the refreshments offered are all quite pricy. Instead of spending so much on the movie ticket and snacks offered at the theatres, people would much rather prefer dining at a high end restaurant with the same money.

On the other hand, watching a movie at home will not give you the same experience as watching in the theatres. It is a different experience all together when a film is watched on a larger screen with a much better audio system. The emotions and ecstasy you feel when viewing a cinema in the theatres is on a whole new level.

Overall, I'm in support of the argument that visually experiencing a movie in the theatres is much more prominent that watching it from home. By going to cinema hall and watching the movie, you are ultimately contributing to the appreciation of the art form and the people behind. It takes a lot of hardwork to make a film of any sort and the least we could do is encourage the art form by contributing a little bit to such a vast product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the decline of cinemas due to online streaming and their ongoing cultural and economic importance—and provides a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas are under-developed. For instance, the economic and cultural aspects mentioned in the introduction are not fully explored in the body paragraphs, which instead focus more on financial costs and personal viewing experiences. The arguments are relevant, but extending the discussion regarding the broader economic impact on local communities or the cultural significance of shared cinematic experiences would help elevate the task response. The position is maintained throughout, yet deeper elaboration is needed to move beyond surface-level points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the convenience of online streaming versus the sensory benefits of theatres. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in how transitions are handled between paragraphs. Referencing could also be smoother; for example, phrases like 'the other that demonstrates' in the opening sentence create a slight strain in logical flow. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring that referencing between sentences remains consistently transparent and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common expressions such as 'digital era', 'convenience', 'ecstasy', and 'appreciation of the art form'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'easy availablity' (spelling and phrasing), 'economical aspect' instead of economic aspect, and describing the cinematic experience as a 'vast product'. Spelling errors like 'hardwork' also occur. While these lexical slips do not impede communication, demonstrating greater precision in word choice, mastering word formation, and avoiding awkward collocations will be essential for the writer to reach a more advanced band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing the ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'With the increase in online streaming platforms, it is not as mandatory for every individual to go to the theatres...'. There are some grammatical errors in grammar and punctuation, including article misuse ('go to the theatres', 'viewing a cinema in the theatres') and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without difficulty. To progress further, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine punctuation control across a wider variety of syntactic structures.
