Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, Theatres and cinemas are no longer Significant because people can watch entertainment online has become a widely debated issue. While some people believe that theatres and cinemas are still valuable economically and culturally, others argue that people can watch entertainment on online platforms. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that theatres and cinemas are Meaningful for the culture and the next generation.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why some people believe that Theatres and cinemas remain important both financially and culturally. The primary reasons are economic benefits, cultural importance, Social experience, and support for the film industry. This is because they create jobs and generate income. Cinemas and theatres employ actors, directors, technicians, cleaners, and other staff. For example, a successful cinema can create jobs and increase revenue for nearby restaurants and shops. Furthermore, they preserve and promote culture. Theatres can showcase local stories, traditions, languages, and art, which means that Local plays can help younger generations learn about their cultural heritage. Therefore, supporters of this view argue that theatres and cinemas are no longer essential in the digital age.

On the other hand, some people believe that theatres and cinemas are no longer important because online platforms provide convenient and affordable entertainment. One major reason is lower cost, More variety, and convenience, etc. In other words, People can watch movies at home. They do not need to travel.

They can watch whenever they want. For instance, Online platforms are accessible 24/7.

People can watch a movie on Netflix or YouTube from their smartphone or TV.

In conclusion, while people can easily watch entertainment online, theatres and cinemas are still important because they create jobs and provide a unique social and cultural experience

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for the continuing cultural value of theatres and cinemas. The economic points—jobs and revenue for nearby businesses—and the example of local plays preserving traditions are relevant and help explain the first view. However, the discussion is uneven: the case for online entertainment is mostly a list of convenience and affordability, with little explanation of its wider significance. There is also a contradiction in saying supporters believe theatres and cinemas are “no longer essential” after presenting reasons for their importance. Your conclusion gives an opinion, but it would be stronger if it briefly weighed the two views and explained why the cultural and social benefits outweigh online convenience.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the broad structure easy to follow, and examples generally sit beside the points they support. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes list-like: the first body paragraph names several reasons, then develops only economic and cultural ones, while the second moves through short, disconnected statements about watching at home. The transition “Therefore” introduces a conclusion that conflicts with the paragraph’s argument. Improve cohesion by grouping related ideas, using clear links between explanation and example, and avoiding abrupt sentence fragments or line breaks that interrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “generate income,” “cultural heritage,” “online platforms,” and “accessible 24/7.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrases show an attempt to be precise. At times, however, word choice or collocation is awkward: “watch entertainment on online platforms” repeats the preposition, and “Meaningful for the culture” is less natural than a phrase such as “culturally significant.” “Lower cost, More variety, and convenience, etc.” is also imprecise and informal, while “no longer Significant” uses unnecessary capitalisation. Aim for natural collocations and consistent spelling and capitalisation, and replace vague list wording with specific terms such as affordability and wider choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which means that local plays can help younger generations…” and a reason clause beginning “because.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some sentence structures are faulty or incomplete. The opening sentence combines two competing constructions—“Theatres and cinemas are no longer Significant because…” and “has become a widely debated issue”—so its meaning is difficult to follow. “One major reason is lower cost, More variety, and convenience” has a mismatch between singular “reason” and a plural list, and “They do not need to travel. They can watch whenever they want” could be joined more smoothly. Check sentence boundaries, agreement, and parallel structure when editing.
