Student answer (Band 6.5)

Entertainment is always a key requirement for people to relax themselves and enjoy their time with friends or families. There is a difference of opinion where some people argue that in this modern digital era, the theatres and cinemas are not much important as people can now watch anything entertaining they want online. While others believe that these are still economically and culturally valuable. In my opinion, although everything is now available on the internet, the significance of cinemas and theatres for our culture and economy is increased.

It is not unkown now that as the world is advancing with technology, businesses and customers are going online, while traders are cutting their costs and customers enjoying having ease in shopping anything from anywhere. Similarly, the films and dramas which were previously watched in the cinemas and theatres are now available on different videos sharing websites, where people can watch them anytime, sitting in their homes. For example, the recent film released by Salman Khan, a famous actor, got 1 Million views online, while the city cinema; a sole distributor of the fim, sold only five thousand tickets in a month, proving that people now prefer to watch films online.

On the other hand, cinemas and theatres are still very important to preserve and promote cultural values. They also provide opportunites where people of different cultures can socialize and share their positive values with each other, and can make new friends. These places are also significant as they keep the economic cycle running, the shop vendors at the cinemas can earn when people buy snacks from them to watch a movie. Additionally, these are also kind of places where people can often do networking and share the business ideas, thus contributing in the economy positively.

In conclusion, while i acknowledge that the digital evolution will rise, and people can have more avenues to entertain them online, i firmly believe that the importance of cinemas and theatres will always remain there to help us preserve culture and to promote economic cycle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: online access is convenient, but cinemas and theatres remain culturally and economically valuable. The examples about online film viewing and cinema ticket sales support the first view, while socialising, cultural exchange, snack vendors and networking support the second. This covers the task well, but the development is uneven: the online example is specific, whereas the economic and cultural claims are mostly asserted rather than explained or evidenced. The claim that cinemas help preserve culture, for instance, would be stronger with an example of a local production or shared cultural experience. Your conclusion restates your position clearly; developing the supporting points more fully would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The contrast between the views is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Similarly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from cultural preservation to socialising, vendors and business networking without showing how these points relate. The opening paragraph also contains several ideas in one long sequence. To improve progression, organise each body paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point. Use referencing and transitions to make relationships between ideas clearer rather than relying mainly on standard linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital era,” “cultural values,” “socialize,” “distributor,” and “economic cycle.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “key requirement for people to relax themselves,” “not much important,” and “videos sharing websites.” There are also spelling errors, including “unkown,” “fim,” and “opportunites,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, “a key way for people to relax,” “less important,” and “video-sharing websites” would express your meaning more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “although everything is now available on the internet” and a relative clause in “the films and dramas which were previously watched…”. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “customers enjoying having ease” lacks a finite verb, and “the importance … is increased” is an awkwardly formed passive construction for your intended meaning. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “the city cinema; a sole distributor,” where the punctuation does not correctly connect the phrase. Review verb forms, article use and punctuation, and try to keep longer sentences controlled. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
