Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important due to uninterrupted internet facility. The importance of theatres and cinemas are decreased day-by-day. Because people use the latest technology in terms of cell phone and online facilities. In my point of view, theatres and cinemas are lost the significance in terms of physical existance due to presence of the latest technology.

Other argue that theatres and cinemas are still significant both economically and culturally. This argue is weak as compared to first one. Because only older people and uneducated population adopted this argument. They cannot use the latest technology and away from the internet facilities. They adopted the old pattern and will go the threatres and cinemas for enjoyment at the end of week. The basic purpose to enjoy in the theatres and cinemas. In South Asia, people are illiterate, they do not know how to use the latest technology. The only source of enjoyment is the theatres and cinemas.

Other argument is still strong due to invention of the latest technology. This generation is very fast and prefer to see the latest movies and drama without wastage of time. They watch the movies and drama on their cell phone or use the latest equipment. The latest tools mean youtube, movies apps and other facilities. Because HD movies available at home without wastage of money and time at the theatres and cinemas.

Summing up, my point of view that use the latest technology and to watch new movies on the yourtube rather than go to the cinemas and theatres.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear preference for online entertainment, especially in the opening and conclusion, and you mention both the online-viewing argument and the continuing use of cinemas. However, the discussion does not fully address the task: the claim that theatres and cinemas remain important economically and culturally is not explained. Instead, you describe their users as “older people and uneducated population,” which is a broad, unsupported generalisation and does not establish their cultural or economic value. Your examples about South Asia and watching films on phones are relevant to access and convenience, but need explanation and support. Develop both sides fairly, for example by discussing cinema employment and shared cultural experiences, before explaining why you favour online viewing. The response meets the stated length requirement; 11 words copied from the prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, and the opening, body paragraphs and “Summing up” make the overall direction identifiable. However, progression between ideas is often unclear. The second paragraph begins with the opposing view, then calls it weak, while the next paragraph introduces “Other argument” as strong without clearly distinguishing which position is being discussed. Repeated links such as “Because” create sentence fragments and do not show the relationship between claims reliably. References such as “This argue” and “They” are also unclear. Organise the body into one paragraph for each view, use topic sentences to signal the contrast, and connect each example directly to the claim it supports. This would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “digital age,” “latest technology,” “online facilities” and “HD movies,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, particularly “latest technology” and “theatres and cinemas.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “uninterrupted internet facility,” “adopted this argument,” and “without wastage of time.” There are also spelling errors, including “existance,” “threatres” and “yourtube,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions and vary repeated terms—for example, distinguish between streaming services, cinema attendance and the film industry. Check spelling and learn common collocations in context so your vocabulary communicates ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt some longer sentences and use basic linking structures, but sentence forms are mostly simple, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the argument difficult to read. For example, “The importance of theatres and cinemas are decreased” has an agreement and verb-form problem, while “In my point of view, theatres and cinemas are lost the significance” has an incorrect verb construction. Several sentences beginning with “Because,” such as “Because people use the latest technology,” are incomplete. Articles, plurals and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise building complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and combine related ideas using accurate clauses. For instance: “Cinema attendance has declined because viewers can stream films at home.”
