Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the digital age, some people believe that theatres and cinemas are less important because people can watch a wide range of entertainment online. However, others argue that these places remain important for both economic and cultural reasons. This essay will provide both perspectives before explaining why I believe that both theatres and cinemas continue to play a significant role in society.

On the one hand, digital entertainment offers several benefits, particularly convenience and affordability. Supporters argue that online platforms can make it easier to plan free time because people can watch films whenever they want. Additionally, online entertainment may often be cheaper, as users can purchase subscriptions instead of paying for transport, tickets, and expensive food. Moreover, the internet provides a wider range of films and cultural content than a local cinema. As a result, online entertainment saves energy and money.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas play a significant role in both economics and culture. Theatres preserve a national cultural heritage and give communities opportunity to have a experience of local art collectively. Cinema while, support film industry and provide opportunities for local filmmakers. Furthermore, create empolyment and generate income to nearby local businesses. For example, cinema visitor may use transport and eat food to nearby cafe and resturant which benefits the local economy. Therefore, such cultural venues should not be abondoned.

In conclusion, although online entertainment is convenient and affordable, but theatres and cinemas remain valueable. Both form of entertainment can coexist because they provide different social, cultural and economic benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear view: theatres and cinemas “continue to play a significant role in society” and can coexist with online entertainment. The online case includes relevant points about convenience, cost and choice, while the opposing case identifies cultural heritage, employment and benefits to nearby businesses. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that theatres preserve national heritage would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how they do so. The economic argument is more developed through the cinema-and-café example, but the cultural case remains brief. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or example to make the response more balanced and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Paragraphing helps the reader follow the discussion, and linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “As a result” make the relationships between ideas clear. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through a logical progression. At times, however, connections within the second body paragraph are less smooth: “Cinema while, support film industry” and “Furthermore, create employment” do not form clear, complete links between ideas. Use complete sentences and make the relationship between cultural and economic points explicit to achieve more consistently flexible cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “digital entertainment,” “cultural heritage,” “local filmmakers,” and “generate income.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrases are appropriate to an academic discussion. However, noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors reduce precision, including “empolyment,” “abondoned,” “valueable,” and “a experience.” Some expressions are also awkward, such as “nearby local businesses” and “cinema visitor.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, especially when discussing cultural institutions and their economic effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including subordinate clauses such as “because people can watch films whenever they want” and “although online entertainment is convenient and affordable.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect sentence completeness and accuracy. For example, “Cinema while, support film industry” lacks a clear sentence structure, and “Furthermore, create employment” has no expressed subject. There are also errors with articles and agreement in “give communities opportunity to have a experience” and “Both form of entertainment.” In the conclusion, “although …, but” uses two contrasting markers together. Practise building complete sentences and checking articles, agreement and clause structure while retaining your attempts at complex forms.
