Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals are of the opinion that cinemas and theatres are no longer useful in the contemporary society. However, others believe that they are culturally and economically important. I strongly believe that people can watch all the entertainment they want online. This essay will explain both views with examples before reaching the conclusion.

Nowadays, technology is deeply embeded in the revolutionized society, taking over every aspect of our life from communication, education to entertainment. Most people, after their hectic work routines, use their digital devices for entertainment purposes. They donot have to travel or pay extra for this. Similarly, there is no specific time or location to entertain yourselves. Individuals have a wide range of topics and ethinicities to choose from while using a laptop or mobile device, to select what types of entertainment they want to watch online. This way is extremely cost efficient and convenient for people due which it is widely selected.

However, despite the wide acceptance and popularity, some people still prefer theatres and cinemas to keep the culture and traditions alive. This method requires the viewer to reach a specific time and location, with limited selection in between topics and has to spend a large amount of time to travel mostly and no privacy for families. For instance, theatres and cinemas in Pakistan, have all kinds of people with different backgrounds and when we visited the place the experience was not comfortable. Additionally, the place was not clean and had a foul smell. Keeping all the points in mind we can work to improve this experience by watching these things online if the local media industry airs the program online. By this we can benefit ourselves both economically and we can keep our culture alive. Similalry, the cinemas should be available with a bettter environment provided.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that entertaining ourselves online proves to be beneficial both economically and culturally which is cost efficient and convenient for most of the people and they can watch local shows

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views and state a position, particularly in the opening claim that online entertainment is preferable and the conclusion that it is economically and culturally beneficial. The discussion of online access includes relevant points about convenience, choice and cost, while the cinema paragraph gives a personal example from Pakistan. However, the task asks you to discuss why theatres and cinemas remain important economically and culturally; this side is not adequately explained. The paragraph mainly lists inconvenience and poor conditions, then suggests improving online access, so the cultural and economic value of venues is left unclear. Your position also shifts slightly when you recommend improving cinemas. Develop the opposing view with specific benefits, such as employment, local production or shared cultural experiences, and clarify your final position. The response meets the stated length requirement; nine words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposting such as “However” helps indicate a change of view. The main ideas are generally grouped by topic: online entertainment is discussed first, followed by cinemas and theatres. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. In the second body paragraph, the points about travel, limited choice, cleanliness, online access and improving cinema conditions are joined without a clear hierarchy. The conclusion is also incomplete in its development and does not fully resolve the tension between preferring online entertainment and recommending better cinemas. Some linking phrases, including “Similarly” and “By this,” do not clearly express the relationship between ideas. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “contemporary society,” “hectic work routines,” “wide range,” and “cost efficient and convenient.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrasing shows an attempt to be precise. However, word choice and collocation are uneven, and spelling errors are noticeable: “embeded,” “donot,” “ethinicities,” “Similalry,” and “bettter.” Some expressions are awkward or unclear, such as “deeply embeded in the revolutionized society,” “no specific time or location to entertain yourselves,” and “limited selection in between topics.” Choose more natural combinations and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary for the cultural and economic role of venues would also help you explain that side of the discussion rather than relying mainly on general claims about convenience.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the opening contrast and the sentence beginning “Most people, after their hectic work routines…”. Meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns recur. For example, “there is no specific time or location to entertain yourselves” shifts from singular “there” to plural “yourselves,” and “This way is extremely cost efficient and convenient for people due which it is widely selected” has an incorrect linking structure. The sentence beginning “This method requires the viewer…” becomes difficult to control as several ideas are joined, and the final sentence is left unfinished. Review agreement, pronoun consistency, clause boundaries and punctuation. Breaking long sentences into shorter units would make your ideas clearer while still allowing you to practise accurate complex structures.
