IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the modern age, the theatres and cinemas have been considerably replaced by the online entertainment platforms.
Many consider that this statement is quite apposite to the situation and a compelling reason for this might be the fact that entertainment like movies and dramas are easily available on various social media platforms. Individuals now acess it more conveniently, cuddling on their couches at home instead of travelling to the cinemas and theatres. Another reason worth- mentioning is that nunmerous websites and streaming networks like Netflix, Prime and other tv browsers offer cheaper subscriptions than the theatres and cinemas tickets.
In the past, the theatres were a significant source of entertainment and enjoyment causing the general public to visit them more often than they visited other places but now this has changed drastically.
Analogous to this, experts from diverse fields believe that theatres and cinemas are still significant with regards to the economy and culture. Some notable theatres built for viewing bull fights in the Roman era are still operating in different parts of the Europe. One notable example of this is the theatre in Verona which is used as a quite popular opera house, still serving its entertainment purposes. Moreover theatre performances are common in various states of italy even today reflecting it as a crucial component of the theatrical culture. In the same way, the cinemas still conduct premiers of the recently released movies and are quite popular heavily contributing to the economies of various nations.
As far as I am concerned, the cinemas and movie theatres are still important culturally and economically in numerous countries playing a pivotal role in the promotion and demonstration of their traditions as well as their culture.
To conclude, many spectators still prefer cinemas in order to watch new films since the streaming platforms do not provide the opportunity to view movies just after their release.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both perspectives and state your view: online platforms offer convenient, cheaper access, while cinemas and theatres retain cultural and economic value. The examples of Verona’s opera house and cinema premieres help make the second view relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The online argument is explained mainly through convenience and subscription costs, while the cultural and economic claims are asserted more than demonstrated; for instance, you mention contributions to national economies without explaining how these arise. Your opinion is clear, but it largely repeats the cultural and economic case rather than weighing the two views. Develop the economic effects with a specific explanation and make your comparison of the views more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an opening, a paragraph for each view, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the discussion easy to follow in broad terms. However, progression within and between paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. Phrases such as “Another reason worth- mentioning,” “Analogous to this,” and “In the same way” signal connections, but some do not express the relationship precisely. The paragraph about the past also interrupts the explanation of online entertainment without clearly advancing the comparison. Your opinion and conclusion repeat similar points rather than building toward a final judgement. Use clearer topic sentences, group related explanations together, and make the conclusion synthesise the two sides instead of restating one argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic and attempt less common expressions, including “compelling reason,” “pivotal role,” and “crucial component.” These choices show ambition, although some are awkward or imprecise in context: “apposite to the situation” is not a natural way to describe the claim, and “tv browsers” does not clearly identify streaming services. There are also spelling errors such as “acess” and “nunmerous,” alongside inconsistent capitalisation in “italy.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Prefer precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe platforms as “streaming services” and say they are “relevant to current viewing habits.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including subordinate clauses such as “since the streaming platforms do not provide the opportunity…” and participial phrasing such as “playing a pivotal role.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the theatres and cinemas tickets” has an incorrect possessive construction, and “theatres built for viewing bull fights … are still operating” creates an unclear relationship between the historical structures and present-day use. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “parts of the Europe” and “in various states of italy.” Review article use, possessives, and sentence boundaries, and make sure long sentences clearly connect each modifier to the noun it describes. Greater control would make the complex structures more effective.
