IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It certainly is true that we, as humans in the digital age, can consume almost all the entertainment we want online. Theaters have been known to men even in the time of ancient Greece. Cinemas are the product of the 20th century and the appearance of the film. So, although they do not have a history as long as theatres do, they have nonetheless influenced our culture and entertainment industry to a significant level.

The best way we can analyze this question is if we keep in mind certain factors. The first one being that theatres and cinemas have a role in economic sphere and they can be a clear indicator whether some entertaining investment was justified. The result some movie makes in cinema during the first week of airing is often seen as an indicator of its quality. This way, cinemas create a kind of public pressure on creators and studios to do their best.

Cinemas and theatres also bring people together in a sort of a ritual and many families see them as a ritual place of entertainment. Many of them have become brand names and even places of admiration for the ones who can't afford them, for one reason or another. To make an example, events at Bolshoi Theatre are considered as highy prestigious and as unique experiences. That gives them a certain aura in public imagination and high regard in the terms of social prestige.

Also, it is true that in the smaller and isolated communities theatres and cinemas can be the only place where people can gather around and together see comething new, thus giving them not only a place for social events but even the topics for discussion.

In my opinion, entertainment in digital age constantly evolves. Not one of traditional physical places for exercise of that entertainment is protected from becoming obsolete in the future. People will go to theatres and cinemas it they adapt to new environment and challenges and rebrand themseleves to fulfill other aspects of human needs, not just mere entertainment, as they have always been more than just that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and give a clear, if qualified, opinion: cinemas and theatres may become obsolete unless they adapt and meet needs beyond entertainment. The cultural and social case is supported with relevant examples, including the Bolshoi Theatre and the role of venues in isolated communities. However, the economic view is less fully explained: the claim that first-week cinema results indicate a film’s quality and pressure studios to improve needs clearer reasoning or evidence, and the online-entertainment view is mostly acknowledged in the opening rather than discussed in depth. Develop these points more evenly and make the economic benefits to jobs, businesses, or local communities explicit to strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, paragraphs presenting the importance of venues, and a concluding personal view. Paragraphs generally have clear central topics, and signposts such as “The first one” and “Also” help readers follow the sequence. However, the discussion does not consistently develop from one point to the next: the economic paragraph moves from box-office results to pressure on creators without fully explaining the link, while the online perspective receives little progression. Some transitions, including “The best way we can analyze this question,” feel formulaic, and “This way” has an unclear reference. Use more precise links between claims and explanations, and organise the body around the two views before evaluating them.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range and show some flexibility with topic-related language, including “digital age,” “economic sphere,” “public pressure,” “isolated communities,” and “social prestige.” Phrases such as “aura in public imagination” also show an attempt to express abstract cultural value. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or awkward, as in “result some movie makes,” “the terms of social prestige,” and “exercise of that entertainment.” There are also spelling errors in “highy,” “comething,” and “themseleves.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Aim for more natural collocations and proofread carefully, especially where you use less familiar expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled, such as “Cinemas are the product of the 20th century and the appearance of the film.” The final sentence also attempts a complex conditional structure, showing range. Some grammatical errors remain, though meaning is generally clear. For example, “The first one being that…” is a fragment, and “whether some entertaining investment was justified” does not fit the intended clause structure. In “People will go to theatres and cinemas it they adapt,” the conditional clause needs “if”; “as they have always been more than just that” also has an unclear grammatical reference. Build complete sentences and check clause links, articles, and punctuation when using longer structures.
