Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is a conventional debate among people that some believes that today theatres and cinemas are no longer important because people can watch all the entertainment they want online. However some think that these are still crucial both culturally and economically. Regardless of these two points, i am convinced that theatres and cinemas are considerably crucial for the growth of our economy and culture.

On one hand, people says that theatres is just waste of money and time. It is foolishness to go to theatre to watch a movie if we can watch it on our mobile in our comfort. There is no need of theatre and why we waste money by buying tickets. Although these are just thought of some aged and conservative people but i can influence a lot of people and these people may be reconsider their thoughts.

Whereas, on the other hand some believe that it is not waste of money. It is just a way to get together. Friends and family can go and watch movies rather than watching it on our mobiles all alone. Moreover it is way to support our country financially and also it can substantially influence our young generation and show them our rich culture. In instance last weekend i take my family to a theatre and we watch a movie on our country's history. After watching the movie my children became curious and began to ask a lot of questions about the history of our country. The government of Canada also invest a significant amount of money on their theatres and it attract their young generation.

In conclusion, today theatres and cinemas are no doubt as important as previously and take part in developing and shaping the young generation by introducing them to their culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: you support the continuing economic and cultural importance of theatres and cinemas. The example of taking your family to a film about national history helps explain the cultural benefit, and the reference to government investment gestures towards the economic argument. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The view that online entertainment makes venues unnecessary is presented mainly as rhetorical questions about cost and convenience, without exploring its wider reasons. The economic point is also asserted rather than explained, and the claim about Canada is not clearly connected to your argument. Develop each view with a specific reason and explain how your examples support it. The response meets the stated length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the opposing views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “Whereas, on the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the overall direction easy to follow. Within paragraphs, however, connections can feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although these are just thought of some aged and conservative people but i can influence a lot of people” does not clearly show how the ideas relate, and the shift from family viewing to national finances and then government investment is abrupt. The conclusion repeats your position but adds little synthesis. Use clearer links between each reason and its supporting example, and organise each body paragraph around one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and convey your main ideas, including “crucial,” “conservative,” “substantially influence,” and “rich culture.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “support our country financially.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “conventional debate,” “it is foolishness,” and “In instance” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Repetition of “waste of money,” “important,” and “watch” also narrows the range. Choose more precise topic vocabulary and check common word partnerships; for example, describe venues as “culturally significant” or say that they “contribute to the economy.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a concession beginning “Although” and a longer example describing your family’s visit. Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. Examples include “some believes,” “people says,” and “theatres is”; in the past-tense anecdote, “last weekend i take” and “we watch” should use past forms. The sentence beginning “Although” is also structurally faulty because it combines “although” with “but” and does not clearly complete the contrast. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and keeping verb tense consistent, then revise complex sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
