Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is widespread debate about whether there is still need of cinemas and theatres in this modern age. People have mixed opinions about the importance of cinemas and theatres. A group of people believe that they are still beneficial for the culture and economy. In contrast, there are some people who think that all the content can be watched online. We will discuss both the views in this essay before explaining why i believe that they are still crucial.

On the one hand, people have a lot of options available to watch any kind of entertainment online in this digital age. In addition, the online content is usually free of cost or in some cases we need to pay a small fee to subscribe and as a result we get access to many movies and shows. People get a variety of options at the comfort of their homes that are available throughout the day. For example, Netflix and YouTube are the most famous online apps that many people use to enjoy movies at home.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas are a source of showcasing our content across the world. Dramas are performed in theatres which shows our cultural values such as acts that demonstrate us about the Independence day. Movies are on aired in cinemas and people buy tickets to watch movies from different countries which promote culture and also bring international income to our country. For instance, Pakistani movie, Maulla Jutt was on aired in many countries and many tickets were sold out which economically benefited the country.

In conclusion, although a lot of entertainment options are available on the internet, cinemas and theatres still play an essential role economically and culturally. These are source of promoting our culture across borders and I strongly believe even though dramas and movies are available to watch online, cinemas and theatre are still needed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: the introduction says you believe cinemas and theatres remain crucial, and the conclusion restates this position. The online-entertainment paragraph explains convenience, choice and low cost, while the opposing paragraph links venues to cultural expression and economic benefits. The examples of Netflix and the Pakistani film Maula Jatt make the discussion relevant. However, some points are asserted more than developed. For example, the claim that theatres showcase culture across the world could be explained further, and the economic benefit of ticket sales is not clearly distinguished from income to the country. Develop these links with specific explanation to make the support more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that reflects your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This organisation is effective, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. To make the flow more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on formulaic transitions and clarify some references. For instance, “they” in “they are still beneficial” refers to cinemas and theatres, but the sentence could name them directly. Also, the final paragraph repeats several ideas from the introduction and body; a more concise synthesis would create a stronger ending.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to discuss the question, including “digital age,” “cultural values,” “international income,” and “promote culture.” The range is adequate, and your meaning is generally clear. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the accuracy and flexibility of the vocabulary. Examples include “free of cost,” “at the comfort of their homes,” “showcasing our content,” and “on aired.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly “cinemas and theatres” and “available.” Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, such as describing venues as “cultural institutions” or saying that a film “was screened internationally.” Proofread names and spelling, including “Maula Jatt,” to maintain accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “although a lot of entertainment options are available…” and a result structure with “as a result.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “whether there is still need” needs an article (“a need”), and “Dramas are performed in theatres which shows” has a subject–verb agreement problem; the relative clause should agree with “dramas.” In “acts that demonstrate us about,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “i” should be capitalised. Review articles, agreement, verb patterns and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
