Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some individuals argue about the importance of cinemas and theatres in this digital age. Unlike some people who believe that online ways of entertainment has replaced the need of such businesses, I agree with the sentiment that these are significant both culturally and for economic impact.

Online platforms has made all sorts of content accessible to general public. If we have an internet connection, we can watch any movie or series at any place of the World. For instance, people can watch newly released movies at pirated websites instead of cinemas. This reduces the charm of visiting the cinemas as it is a hassle to get tickets on the day of release. This is how online accessibilty to entertainment has significantly reduced the significance of cinemas.

Even though some people think cinemas are being replaced by online platforms, I largely believe that the experience which the cinema offers can not be replaced by laptops or projectors at home. Throughout the centuries, people have been inclined towards watching movies on big screens. There are 3D movies as well which lets us feel alive and cannot be achieved on our devices. Furthermore, theatres and cinemas fund other businesses which leads to economic development. People buying tickets for shows generate revenue and provide opportunities for other small businesses. A case in point is that a tuck shop outside such places tend to earn a lot due to increased number of people visiting. This helps them by providing earning opportunities which ultimately strengthens the economy.

To sum it up, individuals argue about the significance of theatres and cinemas. Some believe that online platforms have made content largely accesible to public. I believe that both economically and culturally, these still remain important.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear position: online access has reduced cinema’s appeal, but you believe theatres and cinemas remain culturally and economically important. The discussion is relevant, and the examples of 3D films and nearby businesses help support your view. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the online-entertainment paragraph mainly explains convenience and piracy, while the cultural importance of theatres is asserted more than explored. The economic point is clearer, though the tuck-shop example could be explained in more detail. To strengthen the response, develop the cultural argument with a specific example, such as shared audience experience or live performance, and explain more precisely how online viewing affects the industry.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the opposing view and your position, and a conclusion. The progression is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “For instance,” “Furthermore,” and “To sum it up” guide the reader. Some connections are mechanical or repetitive, however. The conclusion repeats the introduction’s general claim rather than drawing together the main reasons, and “This is how” makes the link between piracy and reduced significance sound abrupt. The reference in “This helps them” is also slightly unclear because the reader must infer that “them” means small businesses. Use more varied transitions and make references explicit, while ensuring each paragraph develops one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “accessible,” “significance,” “revenue,” and “economic development.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions are attempted. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise or repetitive: “online ways of entertainment,” “online accessibility to entertainment,” and “earning opportunities” are not the most natural formulations. “Feel alive” is also vague in the context of 3D films. Spelling slips such as “accessibilty” and “accesible” are noticeable, though the meaning remains clear. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully; varying repeated terms such as “important,” “significance,” and “online platforms” would also improve flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “If we have an internet connection…” and “Even though some people think…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “online ways of entertainment has” and “Online platforms has” have subject–verb agreement errors; “accessible to general public” needs an article; and “There are 3D movies as well which lets us” has a plural subject followed by a singular verb. The sentence about the tuck shop also shifts awkwardly from singular “a tuck shop” to plural “places.” Review agreement, articles, and consistency between singular and plural subjects. Greater accuracy across these structures would make the range you already attempt more effective.
