Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals argue that cinemas and theatres have no longer the same value since now people can watch everything online. On the other hand, some believe they are important for the economy and culture.

In the digital era where all the movies are available on various websites, physically going to cinemas to watch a movie is a hassle. Getting dressed up and driving to the cinemas requires a lot of time. In addition, cinemas charge a hefty amount just for a movie and additional charges for the food. Hence, if the entertainment is available online people would prefer to watch it free of cost on the web. For instance, bollywood industry launches a film in cinemas and after a while it is featured online so people would wait to watch the movie online rather than visit the cinemas.

On the contrary, cinemas and theatres help to generate revenue which can help benefit the economy. People save money to watch their favourite movie in the cinemas to get the experience. They pay for the movie plus the tax which is ultimately used for the development of the country. Theatres are also important culturally as they help to revive the old traditions of theatre plays. For example, spiderman movie broke the records at the box office and helped generate a huge profit. A high revenue results in good income for the government which benefits the whole country.

In conclusion, some people prefer to watch movies online whereas, others believe in experiencing cinemas to help the economy grow in the long term. In my opinion, online entertainment has reduced the importance of cinemas as people prefer to watch everything in their own convenience and in free of cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear opinion: online viewing is presented as more convenient and affordable, while cinemas and theatres are linked to revenue and cultural traditions. The examples about Bollywood releases and a successful Spider-Man film help illustrate the discussion. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The case for online entertainment is supported with practical reasons, whereas the cultural importance of theatres is only briefly mentioned through “revive the old traditions of theatre plays.” The economic argument also needs clearer explanation: ticket taxes and box-office profits are asserted to benefit the country, but the connection is not fully explored. Develop the cultural point with a specific example and explain more precisely how venues support jobs, artists, or local economies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Paragraphs generally keep to their main topic, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “In addition,” and “On the contrary” make the contrast easy to follow. Some connections are mechanical or imprecise, however. “Hence” introduces a conclusion that is not fully established, and “whereas” in the final paragraph joins ideas awkwardly after a comma. The Spider-Man example also follows the cultural point but supports box-office revenue instead, so the paragraph’s progression is less clear. Group the economic and cultural arguments more deliberately, and use referencing and transitions to show exactly how each example supports the point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital era,” “hefty amount,” “generate revenue,” “box office,” and “revive the old traditions.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and some less common expressions show an effort to vary your language. At times, however, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or repetitive. “Cinemas charge a hefty amount just for a movie” is less natural than describing ticket prices, while “in their own convenience” and “in free of cost” are awkward expressions. “Theatres” and “cinemas” are also repeated frequently. Aim for more precise terms such as “ticket prices,” “streaming platforms,” “live performance,” and “cultural heritage,” while checking that phrases sound natural in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional structure “if the entertainment is available online people would prefer…” and the relative clause “which is ultimately used for the development of the country.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “cinemas and theatres have no longer the same value” has an incorrect word order, and “people prefer to watch everything in their own convenience and in free of cost” contains faulty grammatical patterns. The sentence beginning “In the digital era where…” also uses a relative clause awkwardly. Review word order with “no longer,” article and preposition patterns, and punctuation around introductory clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
