Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that in this digitalised era, cinemas and theatres are not as important as they are in the past because they think there are many online applications to watch any type of entertainment that they want to see. Although its true but theatres and cinemas are still very important for both the culture and ecomonic sector of a country and I am also supporting this view.

In this modern era, we have so many applications that are available online for all of us to watch or see any kind of movie, series, live shows or other recorded tv shows and netflix is one of the biggest example which provide this all at one place. This modernisation is making our life easy to enjoy entertainment while sitting anywhere in the world. Apps like these are charging very small amount and some of them available as free while on the other hand theatres or cinemas has separate ticket for each show or movie which is more expensive.

Apart from the applications availability, theatres and cinemas are very important in terms of running the economy of movie industry and also for better cultural prespective. When any new movie released, many people book tickets to watch it on the first day and million of pounds circulated and the movie owners get the money what they invested, for example, spider man 3 was released recently and all our the world it generates around 445 million pounds through theatres or cinemas. When people go to cinemas to watch some show or movie its very helpful in the cultural point of view, when any movie released it also showing culture of where it was recorded and influence many people to follow that culture just by showing it to them.

In conclusion, many applications are available today to just download them and start watching any entertainment thing, but the business movie industry is running and helps economically is still very important and also attract people towards the culture by making movies and tv shows which promoting it by showing the things happen in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state your position clearly: you acknowledge the convenience and lower cost of online platforms, then argue that cinemas and theatres remain important economically and culturally. The example of Netflix supports the first view, while the discussion of ticket sales and films representing local culture supports your opinion. This meets the task well, and the position is clear. To develop the response further, explain more precisely how cinemas and theatres contribute to the economy beyond ticket revenue, and clarify the cultural influence you mention. The Spider-Man example gives a specific figure, but its relevance would be stronger if you explained what the revenue demonstrates and ensured the example is accurate and clearly connected to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for online entertainment, one for the continuing value of cinemas and theatres, and a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Although,” “Apart from,” and “In conclusion.” However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although its true but” combines two contrasting structures, and “When people go to cinemas…” shifts abruptly from economic benefits to cultural ones. The conclusion repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use clearer topic sentences and transitions between the economic and cultural arguments, and make references such as “it” and “this” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including relevant terms such as “digitalised era,” “applications,” “economy,” and “cultural point of view.” Some choices show an attempt to be specific, particularly when describing online viewing and the film industry. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural: “ecomonic,” “prespective,” “million of pounds circulated,” and “the business movie industry is running.” Repetition of “important,” “movie,” and “culture” also limits flexibility. Aim to learn common topic collocations and check spelling and word forms; more precise phrasing would make your ideas clearer without requiring unusually advanced vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “while,” and “when.” This gives the response some variety, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “Although its true but” is not a complete, correctly formed contrast; “Netflix … provide” has subject–verb disagreement; and “theatres or cinemas has separate ticket” has agreement and article problems. The final sentence also contains an unclear structure: “the business movie industry is running and helps economically is still very important.” Practise building accurate complex sentences, checking agreement and articles, and separating ideas when a sentence becomes difficult to control.
