IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The discussion is whether cinemas and theatres are important or not. There are views on both sides lets discuss both the ideas.

First of all People against theatres and cinemas has a valid point that in this digital era where we can watch movies and music or other entertainments on their phones or laptops online then why we spend money on cinemas and theatres. It could be more expensive and also not in everyone's reach. Watching movies at homes is more comfortable as well.

Now the views of people on the other side are more on economical and cultural side. There are certain small buisnesses related to theatres and cinemas which include Popcorn and drinks stalls. And many jobs are also connected with cinemas for example progection room operator, ticket sellars, bars and stalls employes and many others. but the most important aspect for them is that they can watch movies with their friends and family that improves their relationships.

In my opinion theatres and cinemas are also important because watching a movie with fifty to sixty people is a great experience moreover movie night with friends is another level of adventure and enjoyment. Similarly cinemas and theartres are also important for small buisnesses and people working in them, that also plays a positive role in economy. So yes we can watch movies at home but one day in a month or in a week watching movie with friends and family is also very important for some people's mental peace and wellbeing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear personal opinion: online viewing is convenient and potentially cheaper, while cinemas support jobs and businesses and offer a shared experience. These points are relevant to the prompt, and your conclusion reinforces your position. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The case for online entertainment is mostly limited to cost, access and comfort, while the economic and cultural importance of venues could be explained more fully with a specific example or clearer cultural impact. The claim that watching together improves relationships and mental wellbeing is also asserted rather than supported. Develop each main idea with explanation or an example to make the discussion more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. This gives the reader an overall coherent route through the discussion. You also use signposts such as “First of all,” “Now,” and “In my opinion” to show shifts in focus. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the second body paragraph combines economic benefits with social enjoyment without clearly separating or developing them. The opening sentence of the conclusion repeats several earlier points rather than synthesising them. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each supporting detail directly to its main idea; vary linking expressions and use pronouns or reference phrases carefully to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “digital era,” “small businesses,” “projection room operator,” and “mental peace and wellbeing.” However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations and spelling errors reduce precision. For example, “other entertainments” is unnatural in this context, “ticket sellars” and “employes” are misspelled, and “another level of adventure” is informal and imprecise for an academic essay. Repeated use of “important,” “movies,” and “people” also limits variety. Build a more precise vocabulary for economic and cultural effects, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style question (“why we spend money…”) and a relative clause (“which include Popcorn and drinks stalls”). The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. For example, “People … has” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “There are certain small businesses … which include” does not clearly match the plural subject with the intended meaning. The long opening sentence of the first body paragraph is difficult to control, while several sentences begin with “And” or “but” after full stops. Practise breaking long sentences into clear clauses and checking agreement, articles, capitalisation and sentence boundaries.
