Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The advent of internet has paved the way for a new medium of entertainment - online streaming. There are many who say that online streaming has eradicated the need for cinemas and theatres, and many argue against it. While I enjoy the the convenience that streaming platforms bring, I savour the spectacle of watching a movie on the big screen.
Online streaming platforms provide a wide range of content for viewers that is not dependent on its performance at the box office. It increases the accessibility and availability from the comfort of their home. Furthermore, streaming is also seen as a more cost-effective solution to movie halls as, on average, a monthly subscription costs the same as one movie ticket and offers ten times more content choices.
Cinemas and theatres, on the other hand, provide an experience that is not achievable by online streaming platforms. In terms of techincality, they provide a bigger screen and enhanced sound quality. Going to the ciCinem also creates a robust environment for social interaction for people of all ages and backgrounds. In the context of theatres, live plays and musicals provide more exposure to the art form, artists and attract patrons. It helps increase visibility for such talents. Simultaneously, these business models contribute the local economy and social well-being of the people.
Even though streaming platforms have made viewers spoilt for choices, they also encouraged them to stay at home. Conversely, cinemas and theatres urge people to get out and have shared experiences with their peers, helping us build meaningful personal connections in the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and make your preference clear: you value streaming’s convenience but also appreciate the big-screen experience, and your final paragraph explains why shared outings matter to you. The discussion includes relevant points about affordability and access on one side, and technical quality, social interaction, cultural exposure, and local benefits on the other. This covers the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the economic and cultural importance of cinemas and theatres is asserted more than demonstrated. For example, explain how venues support jobs or local businesses, and give a specific example of how live performance sustains cultural traditions. Your position is present, though a more direct statement of which view you ultimately support would make it more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents the contrast, two body paragraphs discuss the respective benefits, and the final paragraph draws a broader comparison. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “on the other hand,” and “Conversely” help readers follow the argument, and paragraphing is appropriate. To make the progression more consistently smooth, connect some claims more explicitly. For instance, the sentence about theatres, artists, and patrons moves quickly from exposure to visibility and then to economic and social benefits; showing how these points relate would strengthen the paragraph’s internal logic. The conclusion also repeats the shared-experience idea without clearly summarising your final judgement. More precise transitions and a decisive closing statement would add polish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “accessibility,” “cost-effective,” “social interaction,” “exposure,” and “meaningful personal connections.” These choices allow you to discuss practical, cultural, and social dimensions rather than relying only on basic terms. There are also some inaccurate or awkward choices that keep the range from being consistently precise: “spoilt for choices” should be “spoilt for choice,” “robust environment” is not a natural collocation here, and “contribute the local economy” needs a different verb pattern. “Techincality” is misspelled, and “ciCinem” appears to be an editing error. Aim for natural collocations and proofread spelling carefully, especially where a less common expression is used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You show a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex structures such as “While I enjoy …, I savour …” and “Even though …, they also …”. Many sentences are controlled and easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical issues remain. In the opening, “The advent of internet” needs an article before “internet”; “It increases the accessibility and availability from the comfort of their home” has an unclear pronoun reference and an awkwardly formed sentence; and “these business models contribute the local economy” is missing the preposition required by the verb. The sentence beginning “Going to the cinema” also needs careful proofreading for its subject and wording. Review articles, verb patterns, and pronoun reference to make the complex sentences more consistently accurate.
