IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the era of modernisation, traditional movie setups like theatres and cinemas have been replaced by online entertainment platforms such as Netflix and YouTube. Many people argue that theatres and cinemas remain crucial economically and culturally. On the other hand, some assert that these mediums have been completely replaced by new online entertainment sources. This essay shall highlight both viewpoints and will ultimately showcase why I prefer the latter opinion.

Some individuals assert that the conventional setups such as theatres and cinemas can never be replaced, since the most convenient plan for family outings is still considered to be a movie plan in entertainment complexes. Any weekend getaway with kids or parents is always a movie plan in many of the households. This not only bonds the families together, but it also showcases the love and affection that the family holds.

On the other hand, with the advent of technology and artificial intelligence, machines tend to replace old setups. Similarly, in the entertainment sector, a plethora of online channels has made it convenient for many people to watch their favourite shows, movies and series at their own pace, without worrying about adhering to the movie schedule in the theatre. Prior work commitments are one of the major reasons people prefer watching online.

In my opinion, I agree with the latter opinion. The new generation has a huge reliance on technology, and they prefer performing most of their tasks online. Whether it includes learning a new skill or watching the news, young citizens always show their inclination towards online mediums as compared to offline setups.

Hence, it can be said that online entertainment setups have replaced the traditional setups of watching movies, shows and series.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You present a clear preference for online entertainment, especially in the introduction and conclusion, and you discuss both sides of the issue. However, the task is only partially addressed because the economic and cultural importance of theatres and cinemas is not really explained. The first supporting paragraph focuses on family outings and bonding, which is relevant culturally, but it does not develop the cultural value of shared live experiences or cinema as an art form. The economic aspect is omitted, while the online-viewing argument is mainly about convenience and work commitments. To strengthen the response, explain both views more fully and support them with specific examples, such as employment and local business revenue on one side, and flexible access or lower costs on the other.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph stating your opinion, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “In my opinion,” and “Hence” make the progression easy to follow. This coherent arrangement supports the reader, although some connections are mechanical and the argument does not develop smoothly from the discussion into your personal position. For example, the family-outing point is followed by a broad claim about technology replacing old setups, without a clear comparison of the two sides. The conclusion also repeats the preference for online entertainment rather than drawing together the main reasons. Use more precise links between claims and explain how each paragraph supports your overall argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “online entertainment platforms,” “advent of technology,” “prior work commitments,” and “inclination.” These choices allow you to discuss the topic clearly, and some less common expressions show an attempt to vary your language. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “traditional movie setups,” “these mediums,” and “showcases the love and affection that the family holds.” “Modernisation” and “artificial intelligence” are also not closely connected to the specific reasons you give. Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, such as “cinema-going,” “streaming services,” and “shared cultural experience.” This would make your argument sound more fluent and appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. For example, the sentence beginning “Many people argue…” contrasts the two positions, while “without worrying about adhering to the movie schedule” adds a subordinate idea effectively. There are some grammatical and punctuation issues, but they rarely obstruct understanding. In “the family holds,” the relative clause is awkwardly constructed; a clearer form would be “the affection family members feel for one another.” The sentence beginning “Whether it includes learning a new skill…” is also an incomplete construction because it lacks a main clause of its own. To improve, check that introductory clauses are attached to complete sentences and vary complex structures while maintaining clear sentence boundaries.
